Money? vs T.J. Watt? – Pittsburgh Steelers, CHOOSE NOW!
The Pittsburgh Steelers face one of the most high-stakes decisions of their offseason: extending franchise cornerstone T.J. Watt.
As the All-Pro linebacker enters the final year of his five-year, $112 million deal signed in 2021, fans have grown increasingly anxious over the lack of a new contract – especially given Watt’s stature and recent public frustration with the team’s playoff struggles.

Back in January, Watt reiterated his desire to remain with the Steelers long term. Still, his comments about the team’s postseason shortcomings and a cryptic Instagram post in April have only fueled speculation that his patience may be wearing thin. While no firm agreement has been announced, there are signs that a resolution may be on the horizon.
Yet there could be trouble ahead after Cleveland Browns’ defensive end Myles Garrett signed a four-year, $160 million deal, which dwarfs Watt’s then-record-setting $112 million deal.
Negotiations continue behind the scenes
Steelers insider Gerry Dulac reported on Monday that the team is actively working on a new deal for Watt and that both sides are aiming to reach an agreement before the start of the regular season. Citing team sources, Dulac suggested that while the process has taken time, there is optimism that a deal will get done.
The slow pace isn’t entirely surprising when you consider the shifting financial landscape. Watt’s original 2021 extension made him the highest-paid defender in league history at the time. But fast forward to 2025, and Myles Garrett of the division-rival Browns has reset the market. Watt’s camp is likely eyeing that figure, seeking a new deal that reflects both his past production and his continued elite status.
Another layer of complexity? The Steelers’ blockbuster trade for wide receiver DK Metcalf, who arrived with a hefty $150 million contract – the largest in franchise history. With so much money already committed to a high-profile offensive weapon, fitting Watt’s desired number under the cap becomes trickier, especially with future roster considerations in play.
So where does that leave one of the most important players in recent Steelers history?
According to Dulac, the answer isn’t cause for panic. While there may be no signature on paper yet, the team is reportedly confident in its ability to secure Watt’s future in Pittsburgh before the regular season kicks off. The front office appears to be playing the long game, ensuring both financial sustainability and competitive balance on both sides of the ball.
Watt, a three-time team MVP and Defensive Player of the Year, remains the heartbeat of the Steelers’ defense. And while fans naturally want to see his future locked in as soon as possible, the ongoing negotiations point to a mutual understanding rather than a looming split.
Until the ink dries, speculation will continue. But all signs suggest that T.J. Watt will stay in black and gold – it’s just a matter of time.
