Good Morning Britain paused for a major news update on Monday. As Kate Garraway and Richard Madeley handed over to Jonathan Swain, the senior correspondent, who revealed that a “major fire” had erupted in the New Forest.
“You can see the fire crews there, just moving around behind me,” he began. “Let’s just show you the flames, because all the smoke is quite atmospheric, you can see, as the sun is beginning to rise.” Pointing out that he and his GMB colleagues were based 3-4km away from the heath fire, Swain added it had been burning since Sunday afternoon (9 August).
“The crews here are actually sending water around 6km away from here, all the way to the fire over there, so [this is] as close as we can get for the moment. But, it was quite dramatic yesterday afternoon, because a van caught on fire, it then sparked the heathland, which then set alight, and tourists that were using the A31, a major road to get down to the South coast, had to get out of their cars.”
Noting that the carriageway and central reservation had to be moved so drivers could turn around and “escape the flames,” Swain explained that a “huge hose” was currently being prepared to put out the fires.

Reflecting on the effects of the ongoing heatwaves, Swain added that several areas across the UK have been impacted by wildfires. “There has also been a fire burning in Cambridgeshire. An incident has been declared there at Sherwood Pines in Mansfield,” he said, adding that a fire had also broken out in Ebor Vale in South Wales.
One of the UK’s hottest summers on record, the Met Office has predicted a fifth heatwave this week. Due to commence on Monday (10 August), temperatures are forecast to reach 36°C in parts of East Anglia and south-east England by Thursday.
