Savannah, 51, was not in the studio on Thursday, but did still appear on the show via video.
Craig Melvin, 44, assumed her position at the desk next to Hoda Kotb, 59.
Hoda was by herself in the studio for the first part of Today, as she and Savannah were on a split screen.
Savannah was reporting from Washington D.C.
Craig joined Hoda in studio about 15 minutes into the broadcast.
A third person did not join Craig and Hoda in the studio.
It is not clear when Savannah will be back in New York.
‘NOT A DRY EYE’
Savannah was in D.C. to give the Tom Hanks Caregiver Champion Award to Adam Driver on Wednesday night.
She received the award last year due to her “recognition of her outstanding support of military caregivers.”
From inside the studio, Hoda said: “Savannah, I know you look forward to this event every time. You said there wasn’t a dry eye in the house, huh?”
“There wasn’t. There wasn’t. It was so emotional meeting caregivers, hearing their stories, lifting them up, spotlighting them,” she said.
“It was a beautiful night. I cannot wait to tell you more about it.”
Savannah went on to say that this year’s ceremony focused on a lot of male caregivers.
“It was fun to see Adam Driver win that award. He gave an amazing speech,” she ended.
Craig pointed out that Adam is a veteran himself and Savannah confirmed that he was a marine.
‘A BEAUTIFUL EVENING’
The hosts talked to Savannah later on in the show and said that she gets so happy thinking about it and that last night was a “beautiful evening.”
She reminded everyone that she had been an ambassador for Hidden Heroes for the past five years, aside Tom Hanks.
The honor was started by Elizabeth Dole and her foundation, which provides “critical support the nation’s six million veterans’ caregivers,” according to Savannah.
She then went on to talk about a father and son whose relationship grew stronger after the father suffered a stroke.
His father is a veteran of the Vietnam War.
Savannah talked to three men who were currently taking care of their fathers who served in the military.
The men said that caregivers get exhausted and need outlets to talk to other caregivers and mental health professionals.
