BIG SURPRISE: Just 1 TWIST – Fox News has chosen Bill Hemmer as the Successor!
Fox News on Monday named Bill Hemmer, one of the network’s longest-serving news anchors, to replace Shepard Smith as host of the channel’s 3 p.m. weekday newscast.
With Mr. Smith at the helm, the 3 p.m. slot often stood out from the pro-Tr::ump commentary that now dominates Fox News’s morning and evening airtime. Mr. Smith routinely took President Tr::ump to task for his falsehoods and invective, earning the ire of the White House and, eventually, some of his own Fox News colleagues.
Mr. Smith abruptly departed in October, disillusioned by the gap between the network’s prime-time programming and the reporting from its newsroom. Since then, his show has been hosted by a rotating group of anchors and correspondents as executives mulled a replacement.
Mr. Hemmer, 55, arrived at Fox News in 2005 from CNN. For the last decade, he has co-hosted “America’s Newsroom,” a late-morning newscast, and served as Fox News’s resident “map man” — the anchor tasked with walking viewers through state-by-state returns on election night with the help of an interactive digital screen. (Mr. Hemmer nicknamed the device the “Bill-board.”)
A strait-laced screen presence, Mr. Hemmer is unlikely to replicate Mr. Smith’s pungent opening monologues, in which the anchor frequently derided Mr. Tr::ump. “Why is it lie after lie after lie?” Mr. Smith asked during a 2017 newscast.
Mr. Hemmer has shown a willingness to challenge Tr::ump aides on-air. In 2017, he pressed Sarah Huckabee Sanders, then the White House press secretary, on why Mr. Tr::ump had crudely insulted the appearance of the MSNBC host Mika Brzezinski. “It just seems like it’s entirely more personal than it needs to be,” Mr. Hemmer told Ms. Sanders at the time.
Unlike Mr. Smith, though, Mr. Hemmer has been the subject of presidential praise: In 2016, Mr. Tr::ump called Mr. Hemmer “very nice” for his coverage of the Republican convention.

His elevation to Mr. Smith’s anchor chair is a step up in prominence for Mr. Hemmer, who will also lead breaking news coverage on Fox News. “Bill is an incredible newsman, and his ability to cut to the heart of the story while humanizing major events has made him a standout talent in news,” Fox News’s president, Jay Wallace, said in a statement.
Mr. Hemmer will begin his new show, “Bill Hemmer Reports,” on Jan. 20. His “America’s Newsroom” co-anchor, Sandra Smith, will continue on in the mornings, with a replacement for Mr. Hemmer to be announced.
