In a heartbreaking tragedy, a Coronation Street actress was discovered dead after spending several days alone in her flat, her life cut tragically short at just 42.
The star had appeared on the UK’s longest-running soap opera, Coronation Street, and had been set to become a firm fixture on the cobbles with a significant storyline — yet fate had far crueller plans in store.
Sadly, the Liverpool-born actress suffered a nervous breakdown during filming, which ultimately led to her sudden departure from the iconic soap.
She was later found dead, having been left without a penny to her name, her life ending in devastating circumstances at the dawn of the new millennium.
Louise Duprey, best known for her portrayal of Amy Nelson in ITV’s Coronation Street, was discovered dead in her Mossley Hill flat in Liverpool in February 2000. Following her passing, neighbours described her as a ‘recluse’, reports the Daily Star.

Born in Liverpool on April 26, 1957, Louise Duprey began her career treading the boards as a theatre actress. An article entitled ‘A History Of Liverpool Thespians’ on The Football Voice shed light on her life and career, revealing that her earliest role came in the critically acclaimed production North, which claimed the prestigious Liverpool Playhouse Young Writers Award.
By 1976, Louise had wed Geoffrey Kasseum, and on November 1, 1976, the couple welcomed their daughter, Marcelle Duprey, into the world.
Louise’s first television appearance came as a journalist in the BBC series Bread (1989), before she went on to star in the 1990 film Dancin’ Thru the Dark as Frances. The film was based on Willy Russell’s celebrated play Stags and Hens. That same year, Louise appeared in an episode of the television series Coasting (1990) as a bookshop assistant, as well as taking an uncredited role as a nurse in Watching.
She subsequently secured a notable TV opportunity with the part of Denise in two episodes of Russ Abbot’s highly regarded 1993 drama September Song. Louise went on to feature in One Foot in the Grave between 1992 and 1993 in two separate roles before landing her true breakthrough in Corrie.
Louise Duprey hit the big time after securing the role of Bettabuy employee Amy Nelson on Britain’s most beloved television programme, appearing across 25 episodes.
Coronation Street’s Amy fell for the considerably younger Andy McDonald (portrayed by Nicholas Cochrane), and the two colleagues became engaged. Louise’s character also had a five year old son from a former partner in Trinidad.

Louise’s storyline with Nick was poised to become one of the show’s defining moments, with the on-screen couple set to make history by featuring in Corrie’s first ever mixed race wedding.
Sadly, Louise’s mental health began to decline during filming, and the actress found herself increasingly struggling in her private life.
Back in 1993, the Corrie actress reportedly experienced a nervous breakdown on set owing to the demands of celebrity and starring in Britain’s most iconic soap opera, which resulted in her sudden exit from the series after less than 12 months in the role.
Louise’s character was removed from the storyline and recast, with Spice Girl Melanie Brown, famously known as Mel B or Scary Spice, taking over the part as a body double for Amy Nelson’s final appearance on the cobbles, without the pop star’s face being distinctly visible on screen to substitute for Louise.
Amy’s wedding to Andy never took place, with the character heading back to Trinidad with her son Dominic and reuniting with her former partner Errol.
Discussing her departure from the famous cobbles, Louise had candidly shared at the time: “I was simply worn out after working eight months solid. I just couldn’t switch off at home. I was being written into the show more and more.
“I didn’t feel frightened about it, but I didn’t want to let anyone down. After leaving I am trying to take each day as it comes. I can now live my life normally, and know that in a couple of months I’ll probably be old news.”

Life as a ‘recluse’ and tragic de@th
Following her Coronation Street departure, Louise lived as a recluse, according to her neighbours.
Shortly after abandoning Corrie, the actress relocated from London to her home city of Liverpool where she resided in Mossley Hill near Liverpool University in a converted 1930s detached flat. Having retreated entirely from public life, Louise was living in a rented first-floor flat near university student accommodation at the time of her de@th.
The Free Library reports that while the downstairs flats had windows ‘adorned with flowers and curtains, the windows of Louise’s home seemed completely bare.’
In February 2000, police forced entry into Louise’s rundown Liverpool flat, discovering her body several days after she had already passed away. Concerns raised by the building’s housing association staff prompted the welfare check, with officers attending the property after noticing a significant build-up of post behind her front door.
Louise passed away aged just 42 from a suspected drug overdose, with police confirming they were not treating her de@th as suspicious.
A Coronation Street spokesperson told The Mirror at the time: “Louise’s de@th is very sad news. She was a lovely girl and our deepest sympathy goes to all her family. Coronation Street had big plans for her character, but sadly it was never to be. If things had gone well there is no doubt that Louise could have still been in the programme to this day.
“Amy was set to explore the racial marriage avenue and it was a big subject for us back in 1993. It was sad to have Louise leave in the way she did but we wished her well for the future.”
Following Louise’s tragic passing, a neighbour told The Mirror: “I knew she had been in Coronation Street, but she was very solitary – a bit of a recluse. She lived upstairs for five years but in all that time I only spoke to her once. When anyone called to the flat she never let them in. It is really sad to think she died alone.”
Louise is survived by her daughter, Marcelle Duprey, now aged 49, who has followed in her mother’s footsteps and forged her own acting career, with notable appearances in well-known productions such as Casualty and Silent Witness.
Tributes to the star
Following her passing, an outpouring of tributes flooded in for the beloved actress. The Free Library reports that Louise’s co-star and on-screen love interest, Nick Cochrane (who played Andy), said: “She was a joy to work with. She always seemed relaxed and confident in herself and she brought a depth to Amy’s character which came over well on screen. I’m so sorry to hear about her de@th.”
Actor Ken Morley, who portrayed Amy Nelson’s Bettabuys manager Reg Holdsworth, shared: “She was a good kid. Her de@th is a shock.”
Her daughter Marcelle spoke out following her mother’s de@th, saying: “I don’t want to comment about my mother until I know what has happened. To try and tell you about her life in a few words could not do her justice.”
