A Lorraine star was surprised with an on-air announcement minutes into the ITV daytime programme.
Ruth Langsford stepped in for Lorraine Kelly on Friday’s show, following Josie Gibson’s debut the day earlier
The shake-up comes after Lorraine revealed earlier this week that she was travelling to the USA for Scotland’s upcoming World Cup match against Morocco on Friday night.
Presenting Lorraine, Ruth spoke to Dr Hilary Jones before a segment with Coronation Street star Samia Longchambon.
After discussing the importance of wearing deodorant in the heatwave, Ruth gave Dr Hilary a birthday surprise.
Ruth began: “Other fantastic news, it’s somebody not a million miles from here, has a birthday today.”

As the studio began to play birthday music, Dr Hilary joked: “Oh really?”
Ruth continued: “Dr Hilary, we couldn’t let you go without a very unhealthy [cake]… but you know what, it’s your birthday! Enjoy, happy birthday!”

As Dr Hilary responded, Ruth added: “Have a lovely day, thank you very much, we definitely will be having some of that cake in the break.”

Dr Hilary’s appearance on the programme comes months after he revealed he was stepping back from the show amid a series of cuts at ITV.

Speaking at the Best Hero Awards last year, he shared: “I’m still working there until December 31, and then I’m a free agent.”
He added that “it’s liberating from the constraints of a news programme presenter” but confirmed he will “probably come back as a guest presenter now and then”.

“People are being very sensitive to the fact that some people are having to move on,” he added.
“A lot of people are being redeployed elsewhere or in the same role. ITV, like everyone else, are having to make changes.”
ITV has undergone a series of shake-ups in recent months, with Lorraine’s previous one-hour slot now being cut to just half an hour, and only running for 30 weeks of the year.
