Rugby legend Kenny Logan has opened up about the physical and emotional toll of his prostate cancer battle, including a frank admission about using a penis pump during his recovery.

The 53 year old, who is married to TV presenter Gabby Logan, was diagnosed with the disease in 2022 after a routine PSA blood test revealed high levels of the protein. Kenny underwent a prostatectomy to remove the cancer and received the all-clear.

However, the treatment had a huge impact on his s3x life with Gabby.

He told The Telegraph this week: “I was forewarned that prostatectomy meant that, at least for a while, getting er3ctions would be impossible. That’s a huge deal for any man. But as I said to Gabby: ‘Let’s just deal with me getting cancer-free. Then we can deal with the s3x part.’”

Kenny says the first few months after surgery were “far tougher than any rugby injury” he’d ever endured. He added that “downstairs” he was “entirely black and blue”.

He also said that he was sent home from hospital with “pads and nappies”. He also said that he was “prepared for post-op urinary incontinence” and admits that he did wake up “in a puddle of my own urine” one night.

The former Scotland player admitted he had prepared himself for the loss of s3xual function, but refused to dwell on worst-case scenarios.

“I never allowed myself to stress ‘what if they never come back’. Instead, I focused on being fit and cancer-free. I’m relentlessly positive.”

Using a penis pump

Three months after surgery, Kenny began to see some improvement. However, things in the bedroom remained “inconsistent” for a while. That’s when he turned to a medical aid.

“It’s certainly not s3xy, but one thing that helped me was using a ‘penis pump’. It is like a hand-held vacuum which stimulates the muscle men need for er3ctions. I used it for 10 minutes a day, several times in that first month. I warned Gabby that if she ever walked in on me using it and didn’t back straight out the door, I’d never speak to her again! Some things are private, even in marriage,” he added.

Orgasms ‘feel the same’

While Kenny no longer ejaculates semen due to the surgery, he said orgasms “feel the same” and that psychological confidence is just as important as physical recovery. He also paid tribute to Gabby, saying that having a partner “who can laugh about it helps”.

Kenny’s latest check-up showed a PSA level of just 0.05, a sign he remains cancer-free. He now wants prostate cancer screening to be as routine as an MOT for a car.

Gabby’s s3x-less marriage admission

The sports presenter has also struggled when it comes to s3x – especially when she hit menopause. She previously revealed she had a spell where she completely went off s3x.

“I had a very healthy relationship with my husband and I loved him and fancied him and I couldn’t understand why I didn’t want to have s3x with him as much or why it was something that I felt I was going to have to have.

“I wanted to keep enjoying having s3x, not feeling that I was just doing it because it’s part of the marriage contract,” she said in a podcast interview.

Gabby said she went on HRT and her “l!b!do came back within a week”.

The couple – who wed in 2001 and have twins, Lois and Reuben, 20, together – have to work at their marriage, Gabby has said.

She said: “The key to our relationship is communication, having fun and making time to be together. If you have something special, you need to look after it.”
