Call The Midwife star Helen George has revealed her boyfriend died after being diagnosed with leukemia.

The 42-year-old actress was dating a mat in secret, but their relationship took a devastating turn after he received a cancer diagnosis.

It came as Helen was about to head off to the Bahamas to film ITV’s Shark! Celebrity Infested Waters. Speaking to The Mirror, Helen wasn’t specific about the timing of the show, but it is believed to have been filmed in the months leading up to is premiere last July.

Addressing the loss, she said: “I had been dating someone who very suddenly got diagnosed with leukaemia. It was pretty serious from the start and he knew.

“The next day after that happened I had to fly out to the Bahamas to film the ITV shark documentary. I would call my best friend and sob down the phone about this lovely, beautiful man.”

Helen says she is now comforted in the belief that her partner is now watching over her in some form. She continued: “He now comes through in my clairvoyance readings – he’s looking after me. I’d like to be a clairvoyant. I’d like to talk to dead people.

“I went to this clairvoyant last week and she said, ‘This is your ex boyfriend, and he died very suddenly after you started dating him. He’s come into the room because he’s not very happy about your situation.”

On the Mystic Mates podcast, she added: “I cried because it was wonderful to think this person, whom I didn’t really know for that long, was there. He was angry that he’d left me looking for someone else and then finding someone else who wasn’t suitable.”

Earlier this year, Helen split from businessman Dan Innes just months after he moved into her home in West London. A source said the pair had “gone their separate ways”.

They said: “They had a whirlwind romance but their differences became apparent. It has been a difficult time for them both,” a source shared of their decision to split.”

In the days after the split, Helen shared a number of quotes, hinting that she had felt “disrespected”. One read: “I absolutely take responsibility for when I am wrong. But I will never apologise for responding to disrespect. If you lit the match, do not stand in the flames pretending to be the victim.”

Another social media post she shared read: “I don’t want my daughter to be like me. I want her to speak up sooner. Walk away faster. Trust herself deeper. Apologise less. Take up more space. Ask bigger questions. Dream louder. And if that means she becomes everything I wasn’t good.”

Helen had been romantically linked to Call The Midwife co-star Olly Rix, who played her on-screen husband. She previously dated Jack Ashton for seven years, with the former couple sharing two daughters together
