Prince Harry Accused of ‘Ultimate Betrayal’ as Royal Author Says William’s Trust Has Been Shattered

Prince Harry has been accused of an “ultimate betrayal” of Prince William as fresh commentary casts doubt on hopes that the brothers’ relationship will improve following the Duke of Sussex’s return to Britain.

Harry and Meghan Markle’s unexpected move back to the UK after six years in California has fuelled speculation that the Duke could eventually repair some of the damage with his family.

But while Harry is reported to have made some progress with King Charles during previous visits, there has been little indication of a breakthrough with William.

Now royal author Andrew Morton has offered a particularly critical assessment of how their relationship changed, arguing that Harry was once expected to become his elder brother’s closest supporter.

Morton Says Harry Went From ‘Wingman’ to ‘Hitman’

Speaking about the brothers, Morton said William and their late mother, Princess Diana, had always viewed Harry as someone who would stand beside the future King.

“I’ve always argued that William saw, and so did Diana; they saw Harry as his wingman, and now he’s turned into a hitman,” Morton said.

The remark reflected Morton’s own interpretation of Harry’s public criticism of the Royal Family rather than a statement from William.

Morton also criticised some of the grievances contained in Harry’s memoir, Spare.

He said Harry complained about receiving a smaller room at Balmoral, having less money and being treated differently from William.

“Well, of course, he wasn’t treated in the same way; he was the spare,” Morton said. “The clue’s in the title.”

He added that William’s position as the future monarch was always fundamentally different.

“William is the one who’s destined to be King, but it’s a very lonely position.”

‘The Thinking Was Always That Harry Would Support William’

Morton argued that senior royals had long expected Harry to play a supporting role as William moved closer to the throne.

“The thinking was always from the Queen to Diana to the rest of the senior royals that Harry would support William,” he said.

“As temperamental as he was, people did feel that he would never betray the Royal Family, which sadly he did.”

Again, the description of Harry’s actions as a “betrayal” was Morton’s personal judgment.

The comments were later discussed on the Heirs & Spares podcast by host Kinsey Schofield and Rupert Bell.

Schofield questioned whether Harry understood how damaging his public criticism may have been to relatives.

Bell argued that the responsibility for repairing relations now rests with Harry.

“Why should the King apologise? Why should William apologise?” he said.

He suggested Harry would need to acknowledge that he may have “overstepped the line” before meaningful reconciliation could happen.

William’s Expectations Compared With Anne’s Loyalty

Bell also speculated that William may have once expected Harry to play a similar role to the one Princess Anne has fulfilled for King Charles.

“I think William probably feels hurt,” he said, stressing that this was his interpretation.

He imagined William expecting his younger brother to remain “a loyal part of the family” and support him in carrying out a role he had been born into.

Bell praised Princess Anne’s loyalty to Charles and also referenced Prince Edward’s support for the monarchy.

“That is what Prince William was expecting of his younger brother,” he claimed.

Bell then made the much stronger claim that Harry and Meghan “want to be the King and Queen of this country.”

There is no evidence in the source that the Sussexes have said they want such a role, so the remark remains Bell’s opinion rather than an established fact.
