Ruthie Henshall, the multi-award winning actress, who has starred in the most popular musicals of the past thirty years, including Cats, Miss Saigon and Les Misérables, detailed the real reason behind her split from Prince Edward.
The pair dated from 1988 to 1993 when they both were in their twenties, before she got engaged to actor John Gordon Sinclair and before the prince met his wife, Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh.

Ruthie, now 59, is dishing all about her on-off romance in her new book, The Showgirl And The Prince. The pair first crossed paths when Prince Edward was 23 and working as a production assistant for Andrew Lloyd-Webber’s Really Useful Theatre Company.
The intimate memoir describes their romance as a “passionate affair”, as she admitted, “I used to keep him up all night”.

In a heartbreaking admission, the actress revealed their “secret relationship” left her feeling as if she were his mistress.

She had previously attended events at Windsor Castle with the prince but just two years into their romance, they had made front page news after being spotted together – it admittedly changed the trajectory of the relationship.

The pair were both busy with work and Edward pulled back from their relationship.
“I was devastated. We’d tried desperately to make it work. But it seemed impossible because of who he was and what I wanted to do in my career,” she wrote, as reported by the Daily Mail.

She added, “I knew it was over. Looking back, I think I went through a sort of breakdown.”
Ruthie and Edward remained friends despite calling time on their romance.
She even attended the prince’s wedding when Edward tied the knot with his wife Sophie.
