Hold your horses, Dallas Cowboys and Cleveland Browns fans. The two teams reportedly aren’t discussing a blockbuster trade involving quarterback Dak Prescott.
Earlier today, popular Cleveland Sports radio host Bruce Drennan reported that the Cowboys and Browns were discussing a Dak Prescott trade. Drennan said this was a reason why defensive end Myles Garrett willingly signed a $160 million extension with Cleveland weeks after requesting a trade.
However, NFL Network’s Jane Slater shut down the rumor, reporting soon after that Dallas is “NOT working on trading Dak to the Browns.” One source told Slater that the rumor is “fake news”, with another saying “absolutely not.”
So make of that as you will.
Dak Prescott signed a four-year contract extension worth $240 million in September, so it’s hard to imagine owner Jerry Jones already wanting to give up on him. Then again, it just takes one can’t-refuse offer for Jones to make a league-altering move like this.

There have been several trade proposals around the internet involving Prescott going to Cleveland, with the No. 2 pick headed to Dallas.
But it doesn’t make sense for the Browns to give up that much capital for a 31-year-old quarterback with a concerning injury history, especially when they could draft a promising prospect like Cam Ward or Shedeur Sanders with the No. 2 selection.

In eight games last season, Prescott completed 64.7 percent of pass attempts for 1,978 yards, 11 touchdowns and eight interceptions before suffering a season-ending hamstring injury that required surgery.
It was a letdown of a year for Prescott’s Cowboys, who went 12-5 in each of the previous three seasons with two NFC East division crowns. But seeing how Jones has operated as the GM in Dallas for three decades, it’s impossible to imagine him trading Dak and beginning a rebuild after one bad season.

The 2025 NFL quarterback draft class is headlined by Miami’s Cam Ward, Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders and Ole Miss’ Jaxson Dart, with the next tier including Alabama’s Jalen Milroe, Oregon’s Dillon Gabriel and Ohio State’s Will Howard.
Ward and Sanders are virtual locks to go in the first round, and likely Dart as well. Of course, Dak Prescott (a 2016 fourth-round pick), Jalen Hurts (a 2020 second-round pick), Kirk Cousins (a 2012 fourth-round pick) and Brock Purdy (2022 Mr. Irrelevant!) are prime examples of how you can find a franchise QB after day one.
The Cowboys handed Prescott a four-year contract extension worth $240 million before their Week 1, 2024 opener against the Cleveland Browns. But could Jerry Jones pull off a big-time surprise at the draft and take Prescott’s successor?
Jeff Risdon of USA Today’s Draft Wire website published a new 2025 two-round NFL mock draft. Rison predicts that the Cowboys will use the No. 44 selection in round two on Jalen Milroe.
Taking a quarterback in an early round wouldn’t at all signal an “all-in” approach. But Jones hit the jackpot when he used a 2016 fourth-round pick on Prescott, not knowing at the time that he would have a historic rookie year after Tony Romo went down with an injury.
Jalen Milroe is widely projected to be a second-round pick. If Dallas has their eyes on the Alabama QB, there’s a possibility they’d have to trade up to get him.

Jalen Milroe Would Be An Enticing Fit In Dallas

Milroe emerged as a dynamic dual-threat quarterback over his last two seasons as Alabama’s starting quarterback. In 2023 and 2024, he threw 39 total touchdowns and compiled 32 rushing scores.
If Milroe landed in Dallas, he’d have CeeDee Lamb and one of the league’s best offensive lines to work with. If Prescott got injured or struggled down the stretch, it would be interesting to see a polarizing prospect like Milroe get his chance to shine on America’s Team.
