BREAKING: Pittsburgh Steelers QB Russell Wilson Is Officially DON

Russell Wilson’s tenure with the Pittsburgh Steelers appears to be up after just one up-and-down year.

The Steelers signed Wilson to a one-year contract last year following his departure from the Denver Broncos, who took on $85 million in dead money after releasing him. But after Pittsburgh’s ugly late-season collapse and humiliating Wild Card Round loss to the Baltimore Ravens, it sounds like Wilson will be playing elsewhere in 2025.

Speaking on “Radio Row” at Super Bowl week in New Orleans, Fox Sports NFL insider Jay Glazer reported that the Steelers don’t plan to bring back Russell Wilson. Glazer also shut down the idea of Wilson joining former head coach Pete Carroll and the Las Vegas Raiders.

“That ain’t gonna happen (Wilson to Las Vegas),” Glazer said. “I don’t think that’s going to happen, either (a return to Pittsburgh). I think you’ll see a new start for Russell.”

Russell Wilson had Pittsburgh sitting pretty at 10-3 following a Week 14 home win against the Cleveland Browns. But the Steelers dropped their final four regular-season games, three of which were decided by double-digit points.

The late-season collapse allowed Lamar Jackson and the Ravens to snag the AFC North en route to a dominant 28-14 win over Pittsburgh in the Wild Card Round. Wilson and company were held to under 20 points over the final five games of 2024.

Justin Fields started the first six games for Pittsburgh while Wilson was sidelined with a calf injury. The Steelers went 4-2 in those games, with Fields throwing for five touchdowns and just one interception. It remains to be seen if the Steelers will give Fields an extended look behind center in 2025 after losing the starting job to Wilson.

Which Teams Could Target Russell Wilson In Free Agency?

QB-needy teams that could eye Russell include the Tennessee Titans, Cleveland Browns and New York Giants, especially if they don’t end up drafting a signal-caller in round one. The Indianapolis Colts could look at Wilson to compete with inconsistent starter Anthony Richardson, too, and maybe the New Orleans Saints if they move on from Derek Carr.

The Chicago Bears are looking for a new head coach after the firing of Matt Eberflus late in the season and reportedly had their sights set on Mike Tomlin.

They team has interviewed several candidates for the vacancy, which they are keen on filling at the soonest. According to ESPN, they were pretty high on Tomlin as they called the Pittsburgh Steelers to find out whether they could talk to him and potentially work out a trade.

The outlet reports that “discussions never made it to Tomlin, nor is it likely they would they have been successful even if they did,” with the Steelers spurning their advances.

Tomlin told reporters to “Save your time” after he was questioned on the possibility of teams making inquiries about his availability during a season-ending press conference earlier this week.

The Steelers are not open to parting ways with their longtime head coach amid interest from other teams, despite him overseeing five consecutive first-round playoff exits.

“I don’t make excuses for failure. I own it, but I also feel like I’m capable and so as long as I’m afforded an opportunity to do that, I will continue,” Tomlin said while discussing the frustration coming from the Steelers fan base. “But I certainly understand their frustrations, and probably more important than that, I share it because that’s how I’m wired.”

Mike Tomlin Revealed to Have No-Trade Clause In His Contract

Per the report, another team also reached out to discuss a trade for the Steelers HC but was told his contract has a no-trade clause.

The 52-year-old signed a three-year extension with Pittsburgh ahead of last season, becoming one of the highest-paid coaches in the league.

ESPN cited other sources who suggested that the Bears deserve plaudits for at least making contact and for recognizing the quality of coach and leader Mike Tomlin is.
