A tragic announcement was made just minutes into BBC Breakfast on Wednesday (September 16). Jon Kay and Sarah Campbell fronted the latest instalment of the programme, delivering the day’s biggest news stories with viewers. This included the devastating news that three people have died in a helicopter crash in Los Angeles.
Sarah said: “Three people have died and another two have been injured after a news helicopter crashed in Los Angeles. Reports say the aircraft was flying close to the scene of a fatal bus crash.” The helicopter crashed in the Chatsworth area of the city on Tuesday evening.
Among those dead is TV reporter Eliana Moreno. KNBC Channel 4 news anchor Colleen Williams announced her de@th live on air, telling viewers: “We’ve been telling you that we’ve been piecing it together here. We knew it was a news chopper.
“We knew we’d lost contact with our people out there, and we’ve just received the confirmation that, in fact, NewsChopper 4 went down just before 7 o’clock tonight in Chatsworth.”
“We’re going to take a couple of minutes to think about that, to process and to regroup.
“In the meantime, if anything should happen, if there is a news conference, if there is anything, we will break into the programme and bring it to you.”
NBC4 and Telemundo 52 released an official statement about the incident.
It said: “We are deeply saddened to share that a helicopter providing aerial news coverage for NBC4 and Telemundo 52 was involved in a fatal accident in Los Angeles on Tuesday evening. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families, friends and colleagues of those who lost their lives.”
The Los Angeles Fire Department told the New York Post that one of the people killed in the crash was likely a pedestrian. The other two fatalities were inside the aircraft.
The helicopter went down while filming footage of a fatal bus crash.
Two people were killed and six others were injured when an SUV collided with a Metro bus in the San Fernando Valley in Los Angeles on Tuesday afternoon.
The LAFD crews said that one person was found dead on the bus, while another person who was ejected from the bus also died.
Six others were taken to nearby hospitals with injuries sustained in the collision, two of whom were in critical condition.
