Meghan Markle may no longer be a working royal, but she has just reminded everyone of an advantage that her estranged sister-in-law, the Princess of Wales, simply cannot use in quite the same way: social media. The Duchess of Sussex’s latest Instagram montage offered a carefully curated glimpse of Sussex life in Britain, showing Prince Harry, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet cycling, fishing and enjoying the countryside.
No paparazzi shot. No official appearance. No third party shaping the story. The Duchess of Sussex, 45, chose the footage, the timing and exactly how much we were allowed to see.
And that is her secret weapon: while the Princess of Wales has the weight of the Crown behind her, Meghan can speak directly to millions whenever she wants.
Meghan Markle can control the story in seconds
Whatever you think of Meghan, she is the epitome of modern celebrity and her latest video was a perfect example. One minute the Sussexes had spent weeks largely flying under the radar following their August return to Britain; the next, she had opened the door herself and given followers a carefully selected glimpse of family life.
We saw Harry walking hand-in-hand with his wife, Lilibet learning to ride a bicycle and Archie cheering his younger sister on. Their faces were largely protected, yet the footage still felt far more intimate than almost anything released through traditional royal channels.
That balance is incredibly powerful. Meghan can show enough to create warmth and familiarity without handing over everything. She decides the footage, the music, the timing and ultimately the narrative.
And unlike a working royal, she does not have to wait for an official engagement to give people something new. That gives her enormous freedom to set the agenda from her phone, and not through the Firm’s chain of command.

Princess Catherine plays by very different rules
Princess Catherine is hardly absent from social media. The Prince and Princess of Wales have increasingly embraced video, including more personal family footage and appearances from Price George, Prince Charlotte and Prince Louis.
But Catherine is the future Queen. Everything she posts carries the weight of the institution behind it, and with that comes an entirely different level of caution.
She cannot suddenly turn her social feeds into a running lifestyle diary, nor would I expect her to. Her online presence has to balance family, duty, charitable work and the dignity expected of somebody who will one day stand beside William as Queen.
Meghan does not have that restriction.
The King has formally reiterated that Prince Harry and his wife remain non-working royals and private citizens, free to pursue their own commercial and charitable interests independently of the monarchy.
Ironically, that distance from the Firm may now give Meghan one of her greatest advantages. She can be spontaneous where Catherine has to be considered.

Meghan Markle has mastered the art of controlled access
I am not suggesting Catherine should suddenly start filming George’s breakfast or serving up daily outfit videos from Windsor. Quite the opposite. Her restraint is part of her strength.
But there is an uncomfortable reality here: social media rewards intimacy, personality and access, and Meghan can offer all three far more freely. It keeps her relevant, keeps her in the headlines and, crucially, keeps her firmly within the royal orbit that still fascinates millions around the world.
Her latest clip generated headlines almost instantly and softened a narrative that had been dominated by security rows, royal status and Palace tensions. Within seconds, the conversation had shifted to happy children, muddy walks and wholesome family life in the British countryside. And Meghan knew the world was watching.
For years, the Sussexes have demanded privacy and, remarkably, their return to Britain appeared to give them exactly that. For weeks, we barely saw them, barely heard from them and knew very little about their day-to-day life.

This is where Meghan Markle has the edge over Princess Catherine
This was Meghan’s powerful moment. She curated the move, selected the footage and opened the door just wide enough to show the world a sickly-sweet, picture-perfect version of Sussex life in Britain.
That is the real power here. Meghan did not simply reappear – she took control of the narrative, shaped it herself and served it up to an audience already waiting for the next glimpse.
Catherine remains one of the most recognisable women in the world and has something Meghan can never replicate: the permanence, platform and authority of the monarchy. But Meghan has something different – freedom.
No Palace filter. No institutional caution. No need to wait for the next official appearance. She can vanish for weeks, then return on her own terms with a carefully chosen clip that instantly puts her back in the conversation. And if she keeps using Instagram this cleverly, Catherine’s team would be foolish not to take notice.
The Princess owns the royal stage. Meghan, meanwhile, has proved she can build one whenever she wants.
