Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are about to blow any hopes of a peaceful reconciliation with the Royal Family out of the water. Brace for impact. It always seemed unlikely that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s return to Britain would pass without fanfare. The couple claim to want privacy, but a media circus follows them wherever they go.
They haven’t publicly explained their move back from the US after six years, but the general consensus was that it was about proximity – to be closer to Harry’s father, King Charles, as he continues cancer treatment, and to give Charles a relationship with his grandchildren, Archie and Lilibet.
Whatever the truth of that, recent events suggest it ranks lower on the Sussexes’ list of priorities than their personal brand. In the space of a week, they’ve taken two steps that only serve to deepen the estrangement between their camp and the Palace.

First, Meghan and Harry expressed “surprise” at the King’s reaffirmation that they remain “private citizens” rather than working royals. Then came reports that they’re preparing to abandon a key part of the 2020 Megxit agreement, brokered by the late Queen Elizabeth II, which would be the ultimate betrayal if true.
That deal barred them from a “half in, half out” role while still holding them to the standards expected of working royals – the Nolan Principles, which include avoiding political controversy, supporting UK government policy abroad and not using royal status for commercial gain.
According to sources cited by The i, the couple no longer consider themselves bound to these terms. Whether this is a formal shift or simply an admission of where things already stood is unclear. Meghan was caught signing off with an HRH title last year and the overlap between her commercial and charity work drew scrutiny after outfits she wore to meet victims of the Bondi Beach attack were promoted on an e-commerce app she’d invested in.
If their previous actions saw them toeing the line of acceptability, a perceived emancipation from the Nolan Principels could land them in even more hot water with the Firm and the public at large.
Reports following their reunion with King Charles in July suggested he was keen to see more of them, but only in a private and lowkey capacity. Other royals, notably Prince William, have not extended the same grace, given the public mud-slinging since the couple’s departure from Britain at the start of the decade.
Ultimately, the timing is hard to ignore. By distancing themselves from the Firm’s core values, Harry and Meghan become the only Britain-based royals free to capitalise on their status. This is only made more suspicious by their string of recent commercial setbacks, including collapsed Netflix and Spotify deals.
If this is just the start of the couple leveraging royal rank – and family conflict – for financial gain, God help us all.
