Prince Harry has reportedly encountered a major obstacle in his plans to revisit his mother Princess Diana’s story, with claims that some of the people closest to her are reluctant to take part in a potential documentary.
The Duke of Sussex is understood, according to reports, to have been exploring the possibility of involving friends and relatives of Diana in a future project. But if the latest claims are accurate, securing their participation could prove far more difficult than expected.
Among those reportedly unwilling to become involved are Diana’s sisters, Lady Sarah McCorquodale and Lady Jane Fellowes.
Their alleged reluctance would be particularly significant. Both women were closely connected to Diana throughout her life and have generally maintained a relatively private public profile since her death in 1997.
Commentator Rob Shuter has claimed that Diana’s family and friends are wary of becoming involved in another highly scrutinised royal dispute.
One source quoted in the reports suggested that appearing in a project associated with Harry could be interpreted as taking a side in the long-running tensions between the Duke and members of the Royal Family.
That claim, however, has not been independently confirmed, and there has been no public statement from either of Diana’s sisters confirming that they have been approached or declined to participate.
Nevertheless, the possibility raises an intriguing question about who gets to tell Diana’s story nearly three decades after her death.
For Harry, Diana remains one of the most important influences in his life. Her death when he was just 12 years old has shaped much of his public narrative, and he has repeatedly spoken about the impact of losing his mother.
A documentary centred on Diana could therefore be intensely personal for the Duke.
But the subject is equally significant for Prince William.

Reports claiming that William opposes Harry’s proposed project have added another layer to that complicated history.
One source quoted in the coverage alleged that William believes Harry should not have exclusive control over their mother’s story.
Yet, once again, such claims about William’s private position should be treated cautiously unless the Prince himself or Kensington Palace confirms them.
The broader issue is nevertheless easy to understand.
Diana’s story belongs to a period when the British monarchy experienced extraordinary public scrutiny. Her marriage to then-Prince Charles, her divorce, her charitable work and her death became defining moments in modern royal history.
Any new documentary revisiting those events would inevitably attract enormous attention.
For Diana’s surviving family and friends, participation could therefore carry considerable emotional and public consequences.
The reported hesitation of people close to Diana also highlights the difficult position faced by those who knew her personally. They could potentially contribute memories that would make a documentary more intimate and compelling, but doing so could also expose them to renewed media scrutiny and questions about the current Royal Family.
For Harry, the challenge may therefore extend beyond finding people willing to speak.
He would need to navigate a deeply sensitive family history while ensuring that any new project is not simply interpreted through the existing William-Harry divide.
That may explain why reports of reluctance from Diana’s relatives have attracted so much attention.
If accurate, their decision would suggest that some of the people closest to Diana prefer to keep her memory separate from today’s royal disagreements.
But it would not necessarily mean they oppose Harry personally or reject his desire to honour his mother.
For now, there is no confirmed indication of the final format, contributors or contents of any future Diana documentary involving Harry.
What remains undeniable is the enduring power of Diana’s story.
Almost thirty years after her death, the Princess of Wales continues to command global attention, while her two sons remain at the centre of different visions for the future of the Royal Family.
And if Harry does move ahead with a new project about his mother, the biggest question may not simply be who agrees to appear.
It may be whether anyone can tell Diana’s story without reopening the divisions that have surrounded her family for so many years.
