Word from Montecito is that Prince Harry intends to fly back home “every few months”. The Duke wants to pivot away from messy, high-profile legal battles, refocus on his British patronage and lay the groundwork for the upcoming Invictus Games in Birmingham. On the surface, it sounds sensible. Less courtroom drama, fewer multi-million-pound lawsuits and a return to charitable duty.
But make no mistake, this big UK plan has all the makings of a recipe for disaster. What begins as routine trips for charity and patronages could easily become a stepping stone, a Trojan horse, for Harry to carve out the very thing he was denied six years ago – a return to public life on an official, part-time footing. And that is precisely why King Charles must stand firm. The late Queen Elizabeth made the rules crystal clear during the Sandringham Summit in 2020.

You cannot be half in and half out. You cannot pick and choose when to wrap yourself in the prestige of the Crown while living as a private commercial entity across the Atlantic.
Her late Majesty saw the inherent danger of a two-tier monarchy. She knew that mixing commercial freedom with official royal duty breeds conflicts of interest, cheapens the institution, and creates a chaotic circus that overshadows the actual work of the Firm. That is precisely why Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie were never granted official, taxpayer-funded working royal status while pursuing private careers in finance and the art world.
Sophie, then Countess of Wessex and now Duchess of Edinburgh, was also forced to completely give up her private PR career after it was proved that running a business while representing the Crown simply does not mix. The line was drawn – you either serve the Crown full-time, or you don’t. There is no middle ground.
As a history graduate, I always like to look to the archives to see just how deep these constitutional roots run – and this idea is far from new. Look back to 1936 and Edward VIII. When he sought a middle-way compromise to marry Wallis Simpson while retaining a partial royal role, the Establishment shut it down immediately. He abdicated the throne and lived the rest of his life in exile as the Duke of Windsor.

If Harry is allowed to establish an official foothold in Britain – popping in every few months to soak up the spotlight with his patronages before jetting back to California to Meghan, Archie and Lilibet – it undermines everything the working Royal Family stands for.
While Prince William, Catherine, the Princess of Wales and Princess Anne carry out gruelling daily schedules of quiet public service year-round, it could easily be the case that Harry and his wife want the glamour of high-profile visits without any of the full-time commitment.
King Charles is a loving father, and no one would fault his desire for peace with his son and risk not being able to see his youngest grandchildren for another four years. But Charles is also the Sovereign. His primary duty is to safeguard the integrity of the Monarchy. He has already proved this with his own brother, Andrew.
Harry walked away in 2020. He chose a new life. He cannot now redefine the rules of royal service to suit his own schedule.
The door for family reconciliation may always be open – but the door to part-time royalty must remain firmly, irrevocably shut.
