Prince William and Princess Kate congratulated England on their World Cup victory last night to secure a place in the semi-finals. The Prince and Princess of Wales said they were “never in doubt” that the team would sail through in a heartwarming post, while offering their condolences to a “proud Norway”, who lost 2-1.

Jude Bellingham cemented his place in the history books as he scored another two goals for the three lions last night, including an extra-time winner, following his glorious quickfire double in the game against Mexico on Monday. The Prince and Princess of Wales said “this is a special team” in their sweet message to the footballers.

They wrote on X: “Well done England! Top performance in a tough environment. This is a special team. Commiserations to a proud Norway team. Onto the semi final… Never in doubt!”

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer also got in on the celebrations while taking a jab at the Norwegian PM. He played on a comment first used by a Norwegian commentator when Norway beat England in 1981.

He said: “Norway 1 – 2 Jude Bellingham. @JonasGahrStore, your boys took one hell of beating.”

Norway secured the early lead last night, with Andreas Schjelderup scoring in the 36th minute. However, Bellingham eased the nerves of the nation with an equaliser during the first-half stoppage time. He scored again in the third minute of extra time to take England into the World Cup semifinals for the first time since 2018.

The Real Madrid star is now tied with England teammate Harry Kane with six goals in this tournament, behind the eight of France’s Kylian Mbappé and Argentina’s Lionel Messi.

Despite the win, manager Thomas Tuchel was far from impressed. He said: “We got lucky. We made life very, very difficult for ourselves. The result is fantastic. We are in the last four. It’s amazing but [I am] not happy with the performance – in every sense.

“We made life difficult for us in the way we played and how we played – sloppy, a lot of technical mistakes, not fast enough, not repetitive enough.”

When asked about his comments, a jubilant Bellingham said: “Yeah well, whatever,” adding that it was a “tough shift” on the field.
