The former president revealed his cancer diagnosis in May
Joe Biden is undergoing radiation therapy after revealing a prostate cancer diagnosis earlier this year.
A spokesman for the former US President confirmed today he was undergoing the treatment.
“As part of a treatment plan for prostate cancer, President Biden is currently undergoing radiation therapy and hormone treatment,” the spokesman said.
The radiation therapy is set to last five weeks and he has already been taking hormone medication in the form of a pill, a source told NBC News.
Mr Biden, who turns 83 next month, confirmed earlier this year he had been diagnosed with metastatic prostate cancer.
He underwent a procedure known as Mohs surgery to remove cancerous cells from his skin in September.
His team said the illness was “aggressive” but hormone-sensitive, meaning it was likely to respond to treatment.
A statement, released in May, read: “Last week, President Joe Biden was seen for a new finding of a prostate nodule after experiencing increasing urinary symptoms.
“On Friday, he was diagnosed with prostate cancer, characterised by a Gleason score of nine (Grade Group five) with metastasis to the bone.
“While this represents a more aggressive form of the disease, the cancer appears to be hormone-sensitive which allows for effective management.”
In a post to X on May 19, Mr Biden wrote: “Cancer touches us all. Like so many of you, Jill and I have learned that we are strongest in the broken places.
“Thank you for lifting us up with love and support.”

According to Cancer Research UK, a Gleason score of nine means the cancerous cells “look very abnormal” and the disease is “likely to grow quickly.”
Radiotherapy is among the treatment methods that can be used to help try and cure cancer, prevent it coming back or alleviate symptoms.
It involves using a type of high energy radiation to target cancer cells and destroy them by damaging their DNA.
When used in the case of prostate cancer, hormone therapy involves blocking or lowering the amount of testosterone in the body, which can help lower the risk of the disease returning.
Mr Biden, who served as president from 2021 to 2025, abruptly ended his bid for reelection last July, just weeks after a halting performance during a debate against Donald Trump prompted panic among his fellow Democrats.
Vice President Kamala Harris took over as the party’s nominee but lost in November to Mr Trump.
At the time of his election in 2020, Mr Biden was the oldest person to win the presidency. Mr Trump, aged 79, however broke that record when he defeated Ms Harris last year.
In February 2023, Mr Biden had a skin lesion removed from his chest that was a basal cell carcinoma, a common form of skin cancer.
