BBC The Repair Shop Guest Overcome With Emotion As Grandfather’s Final Memory Takes Unexpected Turn
The Repair Shop delivered another deeply emotional moment as a guest revealed why restoring her late grandfather’s gardening scissors meant so much to her family.
The BBC favourite returned on Wednesday, September 23, with spin-off Beyond the Barn, which follows guests after their treasured possessions have been restored.
The episode featured Ruth Dalton from Rochester, who had originally brought in a pair of old gardening scissors belonging to her grandfather.
She hoped specialists Dominic Chinea and Jonathan Reid could bring them back to life so they could eventually be used by her son Samuel.
“I have my late grandfather’s gardening scissors,” Ruth explained.
“He used them all the time, and I kind of wanted to keep them as a reminder of him and his gardening.”
Ruth Reveals Why the Scissors Matter So Much
Ruth then explained that Samuel had been diagnosed with Bainbridge-Ropers syndrome, a rare condition said to affect around 300 people worldwide.
She said her son cannot walk or talk and has limited understanding, but completely changes when he spends time outdoors.
“He can’t walk, he can’t talk, he doesn’t really understand much but he loves being outside,” Ruth said.
“His demeanour changes completely when he’s out in the fresh air.”
Gardening therefore became a meaningful connection between Samuel and Ruth’s memories of her grandfather.
After the restoration was completed, Dominic visited Ruth and Samuel at their home to see how the scissors were being used.
Ruth was overwhelmed by the finished result.
“I just didn’t expect them to be so wonderful,” she said.
“Even the colour of them, the rusty bits are all sorted out. It’s just amazing.”
She was particularly moved by one extra detail.
“And then the icing on the cake actually has my grandfather’s name etched in it there.”
‘They’re Samuel’s Now’
When Dominic asked why the scissors held such importance for her, Ruth opened up about her relationship with her grandfather.
“My grandad was a very, very keen gardener,” she said.
“I adored my grandad and I loved spending time with him in his garden.”
Ruth explained that she wanted those memories to continue through Samuel.
“I just wanted to carry that on, and for them to be special for me, and in turn special for Samuel,” she said.
Then came the moment that visibly moved Dominic.
“They’re Samuel’s now.”
Dominic replied: “That’s quite a nice thing to say, that they’re Samuel’s now.”
Ruth added: “I really wanted him to be able to use them to do what my grandad used to do and to do what I used to do.”
“It’s special.”
Dominic agreed, telling her that being able to pass those memories down to Samuel “must just be magic”.
Samuel Learns to Use His Great-Grandfather’s Scissors
Ruth then revealed that Samuel had begun learning how to hold and use the restored scissors.
With his mother helping him, he demonstrated how they could prune flowers together.
For Ruth, seeing her son use something once held by her grandfather carried enormous emotional weight.
“He’s still carrying on the gardening through the scissors,” she said.
She added: “You can see in his face that he gets enjoyment out of it, and that means a lot to me.”
Ruth said Samuel appeared to take real satisfaction from being able to take part.
“And he gets a lot of satisfaction out of it, you can see he’s smiling, he’s accomplishing something.”
‘That’s What It’s All About’
The restoration ultimately became about far more than repairing an old gardening tool.
For Ruth, the scissors created a link between three generations of her family.
They reminded her of the grandfather she adored, gave her something tangible to pass on, and provided Samuel with a way to participate in an activity that clearly brings him joy.
Ruth thanked everyone involved in making that possible.
“I can’t thank everybody enough for everything they’ve done for me, everything they’ve done for Samuel,” she said.
Dominic summed up the meaning of the restoration as he watched the scissors being used outside.
“Seeing them out here, being used and being enjoyed, that’s what it’s all about.”
For Ruth, the restored scissors have ensured that her grandfather’s love of gardening lives on — now through Samuel.
