BOMBSHELL: Earl Spencer torn apart with two words as Prince William ‘heckled’ in public over book
Earl Spencer has faced criticism after Prince William was reportedly heckled about his uncle’s controversial new book while attending a film premiere in London.
GB News commentator Kinsey Schofield accused Princess Diana’s younger brother of being “incredibly unfair” to William after the Prince of Wales was reportedly confronted about allegations contained in Spencer’s memoir.
William and Catherine, Princess of Wales, attended the premiere of Tom Cruise’s latest film Digger in London on Tuesday, September 22. The couple mingled with stars including Cruise and David Beckham before William was reportedly heckled about his uncle’s book.
Speaking on GB News, Schofield argued that William had been placed in an uncomfortable position by the ongoing controversy surrounding Spencer’s claims about the Royal Family.
She pointed out that William was only 15 when Diana died and suggested that, decades later, he was simply attending an event celebrating the British film industry when questions about his family were shouted at him.
Schofield questioned whether bringing the dispute into the public sphere was consistent with Spencer’s stated desire to protect Diana’s legacy.
She argued that Diana’s legacy also includes her eldest son, William, and claimed that renewed tensions between the Spencer and Windsor families could place the future King back in the middle of painful events from his childhood.
The GB News contributor went on to argue that any criticism directed at the monarchy could ultimately affect William because of his position as its future head.
“If Charles Spencer believes he’s settling scores with King Charles,” she said, he should consider that William could eventually inherit the consequences.
Schofield added that she could not imagine Diana would have wanted her son caught up in such a situation.
The controversy comes as Spencer promotes his book, Swan Song: My Sister Diana, which has caused renewed debate surrounding the circumstances and relationships surrounding Diana’s life and death.
Spencer has previously said that neither William nor Prince Harry knew about the book before he informed them it was going to be released. Speaking on ITV’s Lorraine, he explained that he had spoken with both of his nephews but had only previously told his wife, Cat Jarman, about the memoir.
The book has also attracted attention because of allegations concerning King Charles. Among Spencer’s claims is an alleged remark made by his former brother-in-law following Diana’s death.
Buckingham Palace responded unusually strongly last week, despite its stated position that it does not normally comment on books.
A palace spokesperson said the King was mindful that grief between family members could affect judgment and memories, particularly many years after a loss.
The controversy has also drawn criticism from broadcaster Piers Morgan. Morgan called for copies of Spencer’s book to be pulped after claiming he had identified defamatory remarks about himself within its pages.
As the debate around the memoir continues, William’s reported heckling at the London premiere has added another public dimension to the family dispute.
