Jeremy Vine was left furious after Aberdeen University employee, Heather Herbert, launched a shocking social media attack on the late Ann Widdecombe. Speaking with panellists Albie Amankona and Carolyn Harris on Thursday, Jeremy said: “I’m just amazed, still, that we’ve got this character in Aberdeen at the university there, who’s got a job with the university, [and] goes on Blue Sky and says ‘I hope Ann Widdecombe died in pain’. I mean, how the hell does she think she’s going to keep her job?”
As Carolyn agreed, noting that the situation was “absolutely crazy,” Albie weighed in too. “It’s appalling,” he began.

“And these people who dislike Ann because of her socially conservative views on LGBT issues or marriage or virginity or things like that, they like to paint themselves as the compassionate bunch who are open and tolerant and kind. And yet, here they are, wishing that a 78-year-old, old woman died in pain because they disagreed with her views.”
Following the discussion, viewers took to social media, where they shared Jeremy’s outrage. “Fair play to Jeremy, it needs calling out. I hope she does lose her job, she must be punished for that, they cannot continue to employ her. It’s outrageous,” tweeted one.

“Regardless of what people are or think, we all should have the right to express our views and beliefs without threatening or being in fear of violent reprisal. Sadly human nature is warped, people will try to justify horrible actions,” remarked a second.
As of Thursday afternoon, police have confirmed that Helen Herbert had been arrested and charged as a result of the aforementioned post in a bombshell update.
“We received reports on Saturday 11 July 2026 relating to a post made online,” a spokesperson said. “Following further assessment, a 50-year-old has been arrested and charged in connection. A report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.”
