BREAKING NEWS: Prince Harry just tried to upstage William – but it’s backfired badly

Prince Harry just tried his best to upstage his brother Prince William, but it looks to be backfiring on him rather badly. The Duke of Sussex, who is currently in the UK with his wife Meghan Markle and their children Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, made a bombshell move nobody expected today (July 13) by making an appearance on rugby star Joe Marler’s podcast.
The Celebrity Traitors star welcomed the prince, who ditched the UK for California years ago, onto his show Joe Marler Will See You Now to discuss various subjects, including trauma and grief, along with more “lighthearted” topics. But the fact that it comes just weeks after Prince William made his own podcast appearance on Travis Kelce’s podcast strikes me as more than coincidental.

The similarities are bizarre – even down to the sport legends hosting them. Kelce, husband of Taylor Swift, is an NFL player. Marler used to play rugby. Both are showbiz stars in their own right, with Marler launching a reality TV career and Kelce marrying one of the biggest pop superstars of the moment. But it’s quite clear who comes off best.
Prince William’s podcast appearance was jovial and timely, the week Kelce had a “royal wedding” of his own with Swift. And while I don’t begrudge Harry talking about more serious subjects, it’s something he has already discussed at length on his Netflix series and in his book Spare.
William, on the other hand, has kept his private life out of the spotlight as is befitting the Prince of Wales. Even during appearances on the podcast, and an interview with Amanda Holden on Heart FM, he managed to keep it professional while showing his fun side.
I’m not sure why Harry’s every move seems more and more like a PR stunt, but the latest has really rubbed me the wrong way. From Meghan and the kids refusing to make any public appearances while in Britain, to Harry promising to appear on James Corden’s new talk show, it all screams ‘wannabe Hollywood’.
It also screams that he’s desperate to upstage his older brother – and at least according to the consensus on social media, it’s already backfiring on him.
One X user claimed Harry is “copying” William, tweeting: “Copies EVERYTHING his brother does, how embarrassing! He really is the spare, cannot do anything off his own back.”
Another echoed: “Copying Prince William’s interview with the Kelce brothers.”
I’m inclined to agree. Perhaps it’s a soft launch of their much-rumoured UK return after failing in Hollywood. Perhaps it’s simply an attempt to keep his name in UK headlines. But I fear Harry has made yet another mistake here.
