Prince Harry was reportedly left “astounded” by a tense exchange with King Charles and Prince William years before his royal exit, as fresh attention falls on the origins of the brothers’ fractured relationship following the Sussexes’ return to Britain.
Harry and Meghan Markle are now back in the UK with Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, six years after stepping away from their roles as senior working royals and moving to California.
Their unexpected return has once again raised questions about whether Harry can repair relationships with his father and brother.
While the Duke of Sussex is reported to have held several meetings with Charles in recent times, there has been little indication that his relationship with William has significantly improved.
Now, details from royal editor Russell Myers’ biography William and Catherine: The Intimate Inside Story have resurfaced, offering an account of tensions that reportedly began well before Harry and Meghan left royal life.
Harry Reportedly Sought Help Over Meghan’s Security
According to Myers, problems intensified during the early stages of Harry’s relationship with Meghan in 2016.
The author wrote that Meghan became the target of online abuse, including attacks connected to her biracial heritage, prompting Harry to push Palace officials for action.
Myers claimed Harry then turned to royal protection teams when he felt more needed to be done.
“Harry demanded that action be taken,” he wrote.
Royal aides reportedly told him they could not intervene, while protection funded by the Home Office would not be provided until after Harry and Meghan were married.
Harry was said to have appealed to both Charles, then Prince of Wales, and William for help.
According to Myers, Charles maintained that he could not interfere with a government decision involving taxpayer-funded protection.
Harry, however, reportedly compared Meghan’s situation with Kate’s treatment before her marriage to William and felt the rules were being applied differently.
Myers described Harry’s alleged thinking as: “One rule for him and another for me.”
Tense Conversation ‘Left Harry Astounded’
The dispute was reportedly followed by another difficult episode when Harry released a public statement condemning the treatment Meghan was receiving.
According to Myers, Harry acted without first consulting Charles or William.
“Harry’s reaction was furious and swift,” the author wrote.
“Without consulting his father or brother, as the hierarchy would normally dictate, he instructed the Kensington Palace communications team to respond at once.”
The decision reportedly did not go down well with his family.
Myers claimed Charles and William criticised Harry for acting without consulting them, leading to a particularly tense series of conversations.
Harry “was infuriated that his father and brother admonished him for his rash actions,” Myers wrote, adding that the exchanges left him “astounded that his own kin were refusing to offer their support.”
The account represents Myers’ reconstruction of events rather than public statements from Charles or William.
Brothers Became Harder to Bring Together
Myers wrote that the deterioration in the brothers’ relationship became increasingly visible after those disputes.
It reportedly became “harder to get them in the same room,” with both William and Harry offering reasons not to attend meetings together.
However, the book also stresses that William did not initially oppose Meghan.
One source quoted by Myers said William actually found her “quite refreshing” in the early days of the relationship.
“He was genuinely happy for Harry and only wanted the best for him,” the source claimed.
Over time, however, Myers wrote that William felt he had somehow “lost his brother.”
UK Return Has Not Erased Old Tensions
Harry and Meghan’s return has revived hopes in some quarters that the family might eventually reconcile.
The Sussexes are not expected to resume official royal duties, and reports suggest Charles and William remain aligned in rejecting any “half in, half out” arrangement.
Friends of William and Kate have also reportedly said the Prince and Princess of Wales are determined not to become drawn back into past disputes.
Harry’s own claims in Spare, including his account of a physical confrontation with William, have further complicated the relationship. Sources close to William have previously disputed aspects of those allegations.
For now, Harry may be geographically closer to his brother than he has been in years, but the old disagreements surrounding Meghan, security and royal protocol remain central to understanding how the rift developed.
According to Myers’ account, the breakdown was not caused by one single confrontation.
Instead, it grew through a series of disputes that gradually made it harder for William and Harry to occupy the same room, let alone the same side.
