“Heather Herbert was reported to the police over a post made online after Widdecombe’s death on Thursday. A police Scotland spokesperson said, ‘We received reports on Saturday July 11, 2026, relating to a post made online. Following further assessment, a 50-year-old has been arrested and charged in connection. A report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal.”

Herbert was previously reported to police over an online post shared following Ms Widdecombe’s death, which was announced on Friday morning.
The post was reportedly published before it emerged Devon and Cornwall Police had launched a murder probe into the death of the former Tory minister. Police Scotland initially said no criminality had been established in relation to the post.
Ms Widdecombe, 78, a former Conservative minister turned Reform UK spokeswoman, was found dead at her home in Devon on Thursday, having sustained serious injuries.
A man, 28, from Rotherham, South Yorkshire, was originally arrested on suspicion of murder on Saturday.
On Monday, he was re-arrested on suspicion of commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism.
