That distinction may sound small, but it comes at a particularly sensitive moment for the couple after King Charles made their position within the Royal Family clear.
In a letter made public earlier this week, the King told government officials that Harry and Meghan are not working royals despite now being back in Britain. He also reiterated that they should be considered private citizens.
Reports suggest that description has not gone down well inside the Sussex household.
Harry and Meghan are said to prefer the term “public figures,” apparently because they believe it better reflects the fact that they remain members of the Royal Family even though they no longer carry out official royal duties.
No comment from the couple’s spokesperson was obtained by the original report, meaning the claim remains reported rather than formally confirmed by Harry or Meghan themselves.
Still, the suggestion has been enough to trigger strong reactions.
Why the Request Is Not Entirely Unreasonable
There is an obvious argument for describing the Sussexes as public figures.
Whatever people think of Harry and Meghan, they remain among the most closely followed members of the extended Royal Family. Their movements generate headlines, they are regularly photographed, and their projects continue to attract major media attention.
They also appear in high profile productions, including content connected with Netflix.
That makes the idea of treating them in the same way as ordinary private citizens difficult to square with the reality of their public lives.
Being a public figure would not mean returning to royal duties. Nor would it make them working royals again.
Instead, the reported request appears to be about how their position is described now that they are living in Britain while remaining outside the official working Royal Family.
And on that narrow point, the argument is understandable.
If Harry and Meghan were private citizens in the ordinary sense, they would not be appearing in news coverage virtually every day or attracting intense public interest every time they make a move.
The Privacy Question Is Where Things Get Complicated
The problem for the Sussexes is that the term “public figures” immediately runs into another issue that has followed them for years: privacy.
Harry and Meghan have spoken extensively about protecting their private lives, and that history has made some people question why they would now reportedly want a description that emphasizes their public status.
That does not necessarily make the two positions incompatible.
A person can be a public figure while still expecting boundaries around family life and personal matters. But the distinction is one Harry and Meghan will likely continue having to navigate carefully, particularly now that they are back in Britain and once again under intense scrutiny.
The Sussex family is now living in the UK, putting Harry and Meghan physically closer to the institution they stepped away from as senior working royals.
Their return has inevitably renewed debate over where they fit.
