Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s return to the UK as private citizens has raised fresh concern inside royal circles, with experts warning that Buckingham Palace now has far less influence over how the couple choose to operate.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are no longer bound by the same restrictions that came with being working members of the Royal Family. That gives them greater freedom over interviews, projects and public appearances, but it also means they have lost an important layer of Palace support.

Royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams said the situation creates a difficult problem for King Charles’ team because Harry and Meghan can now make their own decisions without having to fit those plans around the official royal calendar.

“The nightmare for the Palace is that they can’t be controlled,” Fitzwilliams told Fox News.

He suggested that clashes between the Sussexes’ activities and official royal engagements could become a particular concern.

“Diary clashes will probably mean royal engagements are overshadowed by what the Sussexes choose to do and what they are, or are not, asked to by the Palace,” he said.

More Freedom Outside The Royal System

Harry and Meghan’s position as private citizens gives them far greater control over their public lives.

They can decide which interviews to accept, which professional projects to pursue and which appearances they want to make without operating under the same Palace structure that once governed their schedules.

That independence may make it harder for Buckingham Palace to coordinate the wider royal diary, particularly if high-profile Sussex appearances take place at the same time as official engagements involving King Charles or other working royals.

The couple’s freedom, however, does not mean the Palace has lost all leverage.

Royal commentator Kinsey Schofield said Buckingham Palace still retains significant control over Harry and Meghan’s access to the institution itself.

According to Schofield, the Palace can determine how much proximity the couple have to working members of the Royal Family, royal residences and official events.

That means Harry and Meghan may be free to make their own professional and media decisions, while Buckingham Palace still controls how closely they are allowed to reconnect with formal royal life.

“The Palace can decide how much proximity they have to working royals, royal residences, and official events,” Schofield said. “That is where the palace still has considerable leverage.”

Meghan’s Freedom Comes With A Trade-Off

Schofield also argued that Meghan’s return to Britain without the restrictions of royal duty comes with a significant downside.

While she may no longer have to follow Palace rules surrounding her public appearances and professional choices, she also no longer benefits from the same institutional protection.

“Meghan may be returning without palace restrictions, but she is also returning without palace protection,” Schofield said.

“You don’t get one without losing the other.”

The comments highlight the unusual position Harry and Meghan now occupy.

They have more independence than they did when operating as senior members of the monarchy, but they no longer have the same automatic access or support that came with that status.

For King Charles’ team, that creates a different challenge from the one the Palace faced when the Sussexes were working royals.

Buckingham Palace may not be able to direct their interviews, projects or appearances, but it can still decide how far those activities overlap with the working Royal Family.

That leaves both sides with different forms of control.

Harry and Meghan can determine how they present themselves publicly and which opportunities they pursue, while the Palace retains authority over official royal spaces, events and access to working members of the family.

The balance may give the Sussexes greater freedom, but according to royal experts, it also removes the protection and institutional backing that once came with life inside the monarchy.
