BBC commentator Clare Balding was left utterly gobsmacked by Queen Camilla’s unexpected moment at Wimbledon. On Wednesday (July 8), British tennis star Arthur Fery delivered a stunning performance on Centre Court when he knocked out ninth seed Flavio Cobolli in straight sets to reach the Wimbledon finals. The UK wildcard needed just two hours and 14 minutes to complete the jaw-dropping match against the Italian sportsman in only his second-ever appearance at the historic grass court.
It was Fery’s first straight-sets triumph, having battled tooth and nail to get through the gruelling five-set encounters in his previous two rounds. But his sensational performance on the court wasn’t the only thing that had tongues wagging.

The match was made even more memorable when Queen Camilla surprised the 23-year-old at the All England Club alongside her sister, Annabel Elliot. The Queen caught both players off guard just moments before they walked out onto the court, stopping to introduce herself and wish him luck before the big match.
The BBC broadcaster was equally taken aback by the royal’s surprise appearance, telling viewers tuning in at home, ‘It’s the Queen, right behind them. I love this!” After Fery’s comprehensive victory, Her Majesty was waiting to offer her personal congratulations to the budding sportsman, telling the young Brit to “keep going” ahead of his semi-final game.
Fery later told reporters: “It’s obviously an honour to play in front of her and it was great to meet her. She had some really kind words for me at the end, as well. So yeah, playing in front of tennis legends and now the Queen, it was really special.”
But it was Fery’s birthday revelation that won over fans at home. He went on: “I told her it was my birthday on Sunday [July 12], so it would be great to play the Wimbledon final on my birthday.” The sportsman turns 24 on the same day as the men’s singles championship match, giving him extra motivation to go all the way at SW19.
Fery’s sensational run will see him jump up the rankings next week, climbing from number 114 to number 36 and becoming the new British no. 1. Despite the physical and mental toll of five consecutive days of intense competition, the sportsman insists his confidence has never been higher.
He explained: “I now feel like I can play even when I’m tired, even when I’m stressed. In any conditions, I feel confident in my game, and I know that I can just go out there and compete.” The player standing between Ferry and a potential birthday final is French Open champion, Alexander Zverev, who is set to play in Friday’s semi-final [July 10].
