Sky news was brought to a halt on Sunday as police issued an official update on the Ann Widdecombe ๐ฆ๐ฎ๐ซ๐๐๐ซ inquiry. Cutting aburptly to the live press conference in Exeter, Devon and Cornwall Assistant Chief Constable Matt Longman began: “Shortly after 9pm on Saturday the 11th of July, a 28-year-old white British man was arrested at an address in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, on suspicion of the ๐ฆ๐ฎ๐ซ๐๐๐ซ of Ms. Widdecombe.
“We were supported by officers from Counterterrorism Police North East and South Yorkshire Police, who carried out the arrest on behalf of Devon and Cornwall. Ms. Widdecombe’s family have been informed of the update and continue to be supported by our specialist officers.”

ACC Longman added that there had been “no information to suggest that this is a terrorism-related incident,” and that “at this point, we are not looking for anyone else in connection with this ๐ฆ๐ฎ๐ซ๐๐๐ซ”. ACC Longman clarified that, for the time being, “detectives remain open-minded about the potential motive,” however, there was nothing to suggest that it was politically motivated either.
He also reiterated that while there would be a “heightened police presence in the coming weeks,” there had been no information to suggest a wider threat to the public at this time.

“Over the past few days, we’ve received in excess of over 120 reports of information to assist us in our investigation into our major incident public portal,” Longham continued, before thanking those involved, and urging anyone with additional information to come forward.
A former Tory MP turned Reform campaigner, Ann was found with serious injuries at her home in Devon on Thursday, though police believe she was attacked on Wednesday. On Sunday evening, a 28-year-old man was arrested. Prior to this arrest, police took into custody a 26-year-old man before stating that he was no longer a part of the investigation.
