Dolly Parton Opens Her Heart About the Loss of Her Beloved Husband, Carl Dean
Country music legend Dolly Parton has spoken for the first time about the heartbreaking loss of her husband of 58 years, Carl Dean, who passed away on March 3 at the age of 82. In a moving interview given to Knox News on March 17, Dolly opened up about her grief, the quiet strength Carl carried through his final days, and how she’s choosing to hold onto the beautiful memories they built together.

“He Suffered Quietly”
Dolly revealed that Carl endured a lot near the end — but in silence.
“He suffered a great deal,” she said. “I’m at peace that he’s at peace, but that don’t keep me from missing him and loving him.”
Despite the pain of loss, Dolly shared that she’s coping better than expected.
“It’s a hole in my heart,” she admitted, “but we’ll fill it with good memories. And he’ll always be a part of me.”
Known for timeless classics like “Jolene” and “I Will Always Love You,” Dolly showed the same vulnerability and authenticity that has always drawn fans to her music — this time, in her reflections on love, loss, and resilience.
Sweet Memories at Dollywood
Dolly also shared some lighthearted and touching memories of Carl’s quiet visits to Dollywood, which celebrates its 40th anniversary this year. Unlike most celebrity spouses, Carl preferred to remain low-key. He would buy his own ticket, wait in line with the crowd, and stroll the park without drawing attention.
“He didn’t want anyone giving him special treatment because he was my husband,” Dolly said with a smile. “He bought his own ticket — stood in line like everyone else. People think that’s hilarious.”
Carl would often leave feedback for Dolly after his visits, always thoughtful and practical — whether it was about adding more bathrooms or easing crowd congestion.
“He’d say, ‘It’s too crowded over in that area,’ or ‘You need to tell them to fix this or that.’”
Even in those small, funny moments, his love and support were always present.
A Loving Goodbye
Just a few days after Carl’s passing, Dolly shared a heartfelt message with her fans. On March 6, she posted a simple yet powerful tribute thanking everyone who reached out with kind words, flowers, and prayers.
“This is a love note to family, friends, and fans,” she wrote. “He is in God’s arms now, and I am okay with that.”
She ended the message with a quiet but powerful goodbye to the love of her life:
“I will always love you.”
Carrying His Memory Forward
As she begins this new chapter of her life, Dolly remains focused on love — not loss. Though her heart aches, she’s holding tightly to their six decades of memories, and honoring Carl in her own special ways.
Through her openness, sense of humor, and unwavering strength, Dolly continues to show the world what real love looks like — even in the face of goodbye.
Carl Dean may no longer be by her side, but through every note she sings, every story she tells, and every smile she shares, his spirit lives on.
