HEARTBREAKING NEWS: BBC radio star ‘quits show’ in huge blow to broadcaster
BBC Radio 4’s flagship Today programme could be facing another major presenter shake-up, with Emma Barnett reportedly preparing to leave the show less than two years after joining.
The 41-year-old broadcaster became part of the Today team in April 2024 following three years at the helm of Woman’s Hour, but reports now suggest she could make her exit within weeks.
Barnett is not believed to be leaving the BBC altogether. Instead, she is said to have been involved in lengthy discussions about fronting a new current affairs podcast for BBC Sounds.
Sources have claimed she is looking forward to what comes next and is “excited to move on to her next challenge”.
If confirmed, Barnett’s departure would represent another significant change for one of BBC Radio 4’s most prominent programmes, coming only weeks after fellow presenter Amol Rajan signed off from the show.
The BBC has not confirmed Barnett’s reported exit, while her representatives have been approached for comment.
Another Major Change for Today
Barnett arrived on Today after establishing herself as one of Radio 4’s best-known voices through Woman’s Hour.
Her move in 2024 placed her at the heart of the BBC’s morning current affairs coverage, but her time on the programme could now prove relatively brief if reports of her departure are accurate.
The broadcaster is reportedly expected to remain within the corporation, potentially moving into the increasingly important podcast space through BBC Sounds.
The BBC itself is said to be relaxed about the speculation, with insiders pointing out that rumours surrounding the Today presenting team are common.
However, the timing is notable after Rajan’s departure earlier this month.
The 43-year-old journalist, who also presents University Challenge, left Today on September 2 after five years with the programme.
His final appearance became an emotional one as he reflected on his time in the studio and thanked both listeners and colleagues.
At the beginning of the programme, Rajan admitted he was “feeling really nervous” about saying goodbye.
Later, speaking directly to Barnett, he jokingly questioned whether leaving had been the right decision.
“Do you think I’ve made a terrible mistake?” he asked.

Rajan used his final broadcast to look back on more than 1,000 hours behind the microphone.
He thanked Barnett and the rest of the presenting team, but reserved particular praise for the producers and staff working behind the scenes.
“It has been such an honour sitting in this studio with you, Emma, with all the presenters, but above all, with the amazing team behind the glass,” he said.
Rajan also stressed the responsibility he felt towards the programme’s audience, saying the team took listeners’ “time and trust” extremely seriously.
He had originally announced in January that he planned to leave Today, having first joined the programme in 2021.
Barnett’s reported departure would therefore leave the show dealing with another change almost immediately after Rajan’s farewell.
The potential move also comes during a wider period of restructuring across the BBC.
Since the beginning of the year, the corporation has been making changes across several major programmes as part of efforts to deliver £500million in savings by 2028.
There is currently no suggestion that Barnett is leaving the BBC as part of those measures, with reports instead pointing towards a new role within the organisation.
For now, she remains associated with Today, and neither Barnett nor the BBC has officially announced her departure.
But if the reported move goes ahead within the coming weeks, one of Radio 4’s most important programmes will have lost two high-profile presenters in quick succession — while Barnett prepares for what could be a very different chapter in her broadcasting career.
