HEARTBREAKING NEWS: Fiona Bruce Left ‘Heartbroken’ After I’m A Celeb Star Shares Tragic Story
Fiona Bruce was left visibly moved on Antiques Roadshow as Olympic legend and I’m A Celebrity star Fatima Whitbread opened up about the painful childhood experience behind one of her most treasured possessions.
The BBC programme visited Valentines Mansion and Gardens in Ilford, where guests brought along unusual and valuable items for the show’s experts to examine.
However, the focus shifted away from antiques when Fiona welcomed former Olympic javelin thrower Fatima, 65, who spoke candidly about spending the first 14 years of her life in the care system.
Introducing her story, Fiona explained that Fatima had experienced a “gruelling childhood in care” before eventually being fostered by the Whitbread family.
Fatima then revealed how sport became an escape from those difficult early years.
“Sport was my saviour Fiona,” she said.
“I was abandoned as a baby and brought up in the care system for the first 14 years of my life.”
‘I Never Thought I’d Find Happiness’
Fatima explained that sport gave her something to focus on at a time when her childhood offered little stability.
“Sport gave me a sense of purpose,” she said.
It also allowed her to believe she had something she could achieve and succeed at, with javelin eventually becoming a defining part of her life.
Fatima met the woman who would become her foster mother, Maggie Whitbread, through sport.
She recalled meeting Maggie during a school netball match, later discovering that she was also the javelin coach Fatima had previously been “cheeky” towards.
The relationship changed Fatima’s life.
“I was very fortunate to find the love of the Whitbreads,” she said.
“14 years is a long time to be institutionalised and I never thought I’d find happiness.”
The conversation then turned to a seemingly simple doll that carries enormous emotional significance for Fatima.
Doll Holds Painful Childhood Memory
Fatima brought a Louby Lou doll onto the programme and explained why she has held onto it for decades.
She said that while living in care during the 1960s and 1970s, very little belonged personally to individual children.
“For me in childcare, most things are communal,” she explained.
Fiona asked: “So there is nothing that is actually yours?”
Fatima replied: “No, nothing you can cling on to that’s yours.”
She then recalled one particularly heartbreaking weekend from her childhood.
Her father had told her he would come to visit, and Fatima spent the whole of Saturday waiting for him outside.
“There was one particular weekend when my dad said he was going to come and visit me and I sat all day on the wall [on] Saturday and no one came,” she recalled.
Eventually, a member of staff told her: “You know, that’s life. Go in the garden.”

Still hoping her father might appear the following day, Fatima returned to the wall on Sunday and waited again.
He did not arrive.
When a care worker named Auntie Ray returned to work on Monday, she brought Fatima the Louby Lou doll.
That small gesture stayed with her for the rest of her life.
Fatima said: “Auntie Ray came to work on the Monday and brought me Louby Lou and I’ve sort of clung on to and it’s been my go-to since.”
Fiona was clearly affected by the story and responded: “That’s just heartbreaking.”
For Fatima, the doll represents far more than a childhood toy. It became something that finally belonged to her during a period when she had very little that she could call her own.
Fatima Uses Her Experience to Help Children in Care
Fatima appeared on the programme as part of her efforts to improve the lives of children growing up in the care system.
Reflecting on her own “traumatising” experiences, she said there are around 110,000 children currently in care and argued that every child deserves security and happiness.
“It’s every child’s birth right really to have a safe and happy childhood,” she said.
She also encouraged people whose own children have grown up and left home to consider fostering.
“Maybe if you have a family that’s grown up and fleeing the nest, you could open your heart and your home to fostering a child,” she said.
She urged potential foster parents to offer children the love and security they need.
Emotional Tribute to Foster Mum Maggie
Fatima ended the segment by paying tribute to Maggie, the woman whose family gave her the stable home she had longed for.
She thanked her foster mother not only for what she had personally done for her, but for giving Fatima the opportunity to use her own experiences to support other children.
Fatima went on to become one of Britain’s most successful athletes, but her appearance on Antiques Roadshow showed why one modest childhood doll remains among her most emotionally important possessions.
Behind it lies the memory of a little girl waiting for a parent who never arrived — and of the act of kindness that finally gave her something of her own to hold onto.
