King Charles has shared an emotional personal message after devastating wildfires caused widespread destruction across parts of the UK and Europe.
The 77-year-old monarch said he and Queen Camilla had been left “appalled” by the damage caused by the fires, which have destroyed homes, affected livelihoods and scarred landscapes during the summer.
The message was shared through the Royal Family’s official Instagram account and focused on the communities dealing with the aftermath, as well as the emergency crews who worked to bring the fires under control.
Opening his statement, Charles wrote: “My wife and I have been appalled by the devastating impact of wildfires this summer and the terrible destruction they have caused to homes, livelihoods and landscapes.”
He specifically referred to the Cairngorms while also acknowledging the impact of fires elsewhere across Britain and other parts of Europe.
King Pays Tribute to Those on the Front Line
Charles went on to praise the people who had worked in dangerous and difficult conditions to tackle the fires.
“I can only express my admiration and appreciation to all those who have worked so tirelessly and courageously, in the U.K. and beyond, to bring these fires under control,” he said.
The King also recognised those supporting communities that now face the long process of rebuilding.
He described the recovery ahead as a “long road to restoration and renewal”, highlighting that the consequences of the fires will continue long after the immediate emergency has passed.
His message placed particular emphasis on the resilience shown by residents, emergency workers and volunteers during the crisis.
Charles Raises Fresh Climate Concerns
The monarch also used the statement to address the wider environmental pressures he believes are contributing to increasingly destructive events.
Charles said that seeing similar fires around the world in recent months had been deeply troubling.
“The shock of witnessing these fires around the world in recent months reminds us forcibly of the mounting pressures that prolonged heat and drought are placing upon our precious Earth,” he wrote.
The King called for stronger preparation and risk reduction to help communities withstand future disasters.
But he also said more needed to be done to tackle what he described as the root causes of climate change.
Charles warned that failing to address those underlying problems risked creating conditions in which devastating and costly events could become more frequent.
The environmental message reflects an issue that has been closely associated with Charles throughout much of his public life.
Long before becoming monarch, he regularly spoke about climate change, conservation, sustainable farming and the protection of the natural world.
‘Strength to Rebuild’
Despite the seriousness of his warning, Charles ended the message by focusing on hope and the strength shown by communities affected by the fires.
“As the work of recovery still goes on for many, the compassion and fortitude of the communities affected shine through,” he wrote.
The King then offered a heartfelt wish for those trying to rebuild their homes and lives.
“It is my most heartfelt hope that they continue to find in one another the strength to rebuild.”
The statement comes during a busy period for the Royal Family, with Charles continuing his official duties while other family matters remain under intense public attention.
However, the King made no reference to those issues in his message.
Instead, his focus remained entirely on those affected by the wildfires, the people working to support them and the wider environmental challenges he believes must be addressed.
His words combined sympathy for families facing loss with admiration for those responding to the disaster.
