Steve doesn’t know how long he has left to live
Gardeners’ World host Monty Don paid tribute to one of the stars of this week’s show after he revealed that he’s been diagnosed with terminal cancer.
Monty – who had cancer himself as a child – introduced viewers to inventor Steve and his wife Pippa on this week’s show (August 8).
The couple own a stunning home in Cambridge that has a full-sized windmill in the middle of its garden. And Steve, who doesn’t know how long he has left to live, has spent years restoring it to its former glory.

Gardeners’ World guest shares cancer diagnosis
Monty introduced the couple, who showed viewers around their home. However, viewers’ joy at the gorgeous garden was soon replaced with sadness when they learned of Steve’s diagnosis.
Speaking to camera, he spoke about his illness – and also how he’s preparing Pippa for life after he’s gone.
“Very recently, I’ve been diagnosed with a terminal cancer. And I don’t know how long I may live – it may be two months or two years possibly,” he said.

Steve then added: “I didn’t feel down as a result of it, I just saw it as another challenge – like, I’m going to have to sort something out for this. And actually, I’ve had a big creative burst, as a result of that positive attitude. And I’m getting there.
“I’m finding ways that Pippa and our son will be able to manage this whole process once I’ve gone,” he said, speaking about the windmill.
Reflecting on the legacy he’d like to leave behind, Steve concluded: “I’d very much like to be remembered for the restoration of the mill. But I actually feel more strongly about the garden.”

Monty and viewers react
After Steve’s film had ended, the camera went back to Gardeners’ World host Monty. And, after a long, reflective pause, he said in a sombre tone: “Well I think that Stephen and Pippa have created this extraordinary legacy of a beautiful garden around a full-sized windmill. I’ve never seen that before.”
Viewers were quick to share their sadness. One said: “Stunning cottage-type garden with a bonus windmill. Typical cancer comes along for the bloke who still wants to finish it. Let’s hope he can do it as he dearly loves his wife.”
Another commented: “What an inspiration.” A third said: “Well that took a sad and rather dark turn,” accompanied by an emotional emoji.
Finally, another viewer sent their well wishes and posted: “Take care Stephen.”
