Richard Beckinsale was one of Britain’s most promising comedy stars when his life was cut devastatingly short at the age of just 31.
Best known for playing Lennie Godber alongside Ronnie Barker in the much-loved BBC sitcom Porridge, Beckinsale had become a familiar face on British television throughout the 1970s.
But on March 19, 1979, the actor was found dead at his Berkshire home after suffering a heart attack in his sleep.
His death shocked the entertainment industry and left behind his actress wife Judy Loe and his two daughters, Samantha and future Hollywood star Kate Beckinsale, who was only five at the time.
Warning Signs Before His Death
At the time, Beckinsale’s career was continuing to grow.
He had finished working on Porridge and was starring in a new sitcom called Bloomers, which was set inside a florist’s shop.
He had also secured a role in Stephen Frears’ film Bloody Kids.
However, before his death, Beckinsale had reportedly begun experiencing worrying health problems, including dizzy spells and blackouts.
He told his wife that he had not been feeling well and sought medical advice.
According to reports, his GP did not identify a serious heart condition, instead linking the symptoms to slightly elevated cholesterol and an overactive stomach lining.
While Judy was in hospital undergoing a routine operation, Beckinsale continued working.
On March 17, he attended a showbusiness party being held as a farewell for the Two Ronnies ahead of their trip to Australia.
Among those at the gathering was fellow actor David Jason.
The following day, Beckinsale returned to work on Bloomers before taking his young daughter Kate to visit Judy in hospital.
Afterwards, Kate was left with relatives for the night and Beckinsale went back to the family home.
Final Phone Calls Raised Concern
Later that evening, Beckinsale reportedly made several telephone calls, including one to his eldest daughter Samantha and others to friends.
During the conversations, he mentioned experiencing chest pains.
Despite the discomfort, the actor reportedly joked about his condition before eventually going to bed.
The following morning, concerns grew when he failed to arrive on the Bloomers set.
Production staff called his home and spoke to a family friend who had arrived that morning to help care for Kate.
She initially believed Beckinsale was still asleep.
When she went to wake him, however, she quickly realised something was seriously wrong.
A doctor was called and confirmed that Beckinsale had died several hours earlier.
A post-mortem examination later revealed that he had suffered a heart attack and uncovered a previously undiagnosed congenital defect.
Ronnie Barker Paid Emotional Tribute
Only days after Beckinsale’s death, the BAFTA Awards went ahead in London.
His Porridge co-star Ronnie Barker delivered a moving tribute while accepting an award.
“We’ve lost the best young comedy actor this country has ever had,” Barker said.
The words reflected the scale of the shock surrounding Beckinsale’s death.
He had already built an impressive television career but was still considered a young actor with potentially decades of work ahead of him.
For his daughter Kate, the loss has remained deeply personal.
The Underworld actress has previously spoken about watching her father’s old programmes as a way of maintaining a connection with him.
Decades later, she would endure further family heartbreak.
Her stepfather Roy Battersby died in 2024, prompting Kate to speak openly about the painful experience of losing another father figure.
She described the grief as “falling through an abyss” and reflected on the hope that the two men’s energies had somehow met.
Kate later suffered another devastating loss when her mother Judy died.
Paying tribute, Kate described her mother as a woman with an enormous heart whose kindness had touched countless people.
For the actress, the deaths meant losing both of the parental figures who had shaped her life.
Richard Beckinsale’s own career may have lasted only a short time, but his performances ensured he was never forgotten.
