Cannon Hall Farm Family’s Heartbreak as Anita Nicholson Reveals Brother’s Sudden Death at Just 48
Cannon Hall Farm’s Anita Nicholson has opened up about the devastating loss of her older brother, who died suddenly after mistaking the signs of a heart attack for indigestion.
Brian Major was only 48 when he passed away in 2009. The site manager and father of two was reading a newspaper at the dining table in his home when he suffered the fatal heart attack.
Brian initially believed that he was experiencing indigestion, leaving his family heartbroken when the true seriousness of his condition became clear.
His younger sister Anita, who is married to Cannon Hall Farm owner David Nicholson, has never forgotten the years her brother was denied.
Earlier this year, she completed the Manchester Marathon in his memory while raising money for the British Heart Foundation.
Anita honoured Brian after turning 60
Anita decided to take on the marathon after reaching her 60th birthday, using the personal milestone to reflect on everything Brian had missed.
“I turned 60 this year and wanted to do something to mark that milestone and to honour Brian,” she said.
“I’m so very aware that he never got the chance to enjoy all the years that I have and he is very dearly missed.”
The challenge allowed Anita to transform the family’s grief into support for research into heart and circulatory conditions.
“Running for the British Heart Foundation makes me feel like I’m doing something positive through helping to fund research that can help others,” she explained.
“The foundation has helped halve the number of people dying from heart and circulatory disease in the UK, but sadly every day hundreds of people lose their lives.”
Marathon also dedicated to her cousins
Anita revealed that her decision to support the charity was also deeply connected to other members of her family.
Several cousins to whom she is extremely close have inherited conditions affecting the heart muscle.
“It’s only thanks to support from people like us that the BHF can create new treatments and discover new cures,” she said.
Anita added that £24 could fund two hours of research by a scientist at the beginning of their career.
“I also have cousins, who I’m extremely close to, who have inherited heart muscle conditions,” she continued. “This marathon is for Brian and them.”
Helen Skelton joined her training
Anita received encouragement from Cannon Hall Farm supporters as she prepared for the marathon.
On the Farm presenters Jules Hudson and Helen Skelton were also among those supporting her challenge, with Helen even joining Anita for a training run.
“Helen Skelton has done a training run with me and is very supportive,” Anita revealed.
The 60-year-old was not completely new to running before taking on the demanding distance. She regularly goes out with friends approximately three times a week.
However, Anita said their outings are more about companionship than chasing quick times.
“We don’t go particularly fast as we like to chat and set the world to rights,” she said.
“It’s all about the friendship and getting outside for me.”
She also spoke warmly about filming at Cannon Hall Farm, explaining that visits from presenters and production crews add to the excitement surrounding life there.
“We always enjoy the filming as it adds to the sense of excitement about the farm,” Anita said. “It’s great to have the presenters and crew showing so much interest in everything that’s going on.”
Cannon Hall Farm’s familiar television family
Anita married farmer David Nicholson in April 1994.
David runs Cannon Hall Farm alongside his father Roger and brothers Richard and Rob. The Nicholson family has become familiar to television audiences through programmes including Springtime on the Farm and The Yorkshire Vet.
They have also appeared on Channel 5’s coverage of The Great Yorkshire Show.
Behind the family’s television success, Brian’s sudden death remains a deeply painful memory. Anita’s marathon ensured that his life was honoured while raising money she hopes will help other families avoid experiencing the same heartbreak.
