Buckingham Palace has turned the spotlight onto senior working members of the Royal Family as tensions surrounding Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s return to Britain continue to dominate royal headlines.
Fresh updates from the Palace have focused on Prince Edward and the Duchess of Gloucester, both of whom have been carrying out official engagements while questions continue over the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s position following their move back to the UK.
The Royal Family’s official Instagram account shared details of the Duke of Edinburgh’s visit to Geneva this week, where his programme centred on young people, education, sport and the changing world of work.
According to the Palace, the trip explored why “Human Skills matter more than ever”, with Edward taking part in meetings and events involving a broad range of organisations and senior figures.
His engagements included discussions with the President of the Swiss Confederation as well as representatives from the International Telecommunication Union, UEFA, Manchester City, West Ham, the World Economic Forum and the International Labour Organization.
Prince Edward Focuses on Young People in Geneva
The Duke’s visit also involved schools, decision-makers and supporters of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.
The Palace said the programme examined how young people could be helped to develop confidence, resilience, judgement and teamwork, while also giving them a stronger sense of purpose as the world around them changes rapidly.
The update placed the focus firmly on Edward’s role as a senior working royal and his continuing public commitments.
Buckingham Palace followed that post with another update, this time highlighting the Duchess of Gloucester.
She visited The Garrison Chapel for the CHANEL, le19M and The King’s Foundation Métiers d’Art Fellowships Exhibition.
The exhibition showcases work created by recent graduates from three fellowships covering embroidery, millinery and fashion production.
The Palace noted that the Duchess has been a longstanding supporter of the programme and has previously worn handcrafted pieces made by graduates at high-profile occasions, including Royal Ascot.
Palace Updates Come During Renewed Sussex Tensions
The focus on working royals comes at a particularly sensitive moment for the wider family.
Harry and Meghan recently returned to the UK with their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, six years after stepping away from senior royal duties.
Their move immediately raised questions about whether living in Britain again could change their relationship with the monarchy or their official status.
King Charles subsequently approved formal guidance making clear that it would not.
The letter stated that Harry and Meghan would continue to operate as private individuals and would not resume duties as working members of the Royal Family.
The guidance effectively reinforced the arrangement put in place after the Sussexes stepped away from royal life in 2020, despite their return to Britain.
The development has added to speculation about the state of Harry’s relationship with his father.
It has also been reported that Charles has not spoken to Harry since the Duke returned to the UK with his family, further fuelling suggestions that the distance between the two sides remains unresolved.

Prince Edward’s international programme and the Duchess of Gloucester’s arts engagement underline the distinction the Palace has drawn between those carrying out duties on behalf of the monarchy and Harry and Meghan’s position outside that structure.
For the Sussexes, returning to Britain may have represented a major geographical change. But the message from the King has been considerably more straightforward: their move back to the UK has not changed where they stand within the working Royal Family.
