Lawrence O’Donnell, the MSNBC anchor, is exploring new opportunities as his contract nears its end with the cable network, which is undergoing a major restructuring.
A source told The U.S. Sun that O’Donnell has been searching for fresh options, though finding a deal that matches his current value seems to be a difficult task.
“Lawrence and his agent have been exploring other options, but there’s not much available for the price he wants,” the source shared.
O’Donnell isn’t just eyeing other news gigs.
He’s also considering a return to scripted television, an area where he gained recognition as a writer and producer for The West Wing from 1999 to 2006.

“He was recently in Los Angeles during a break from MSNBC, where he still owns a home. He’s been talking about working on a new TV series,” the insider said.
The timing of O’Donnell’s career exploration comes as Comcast, MSNBC’s parent company, prepares to spin off certain assets into an independent, publicly traded TV business under SpinCo.
Recent months have seen notable changes at MSNBC, including the departure of high-profile anchors like Joy Reid and Alex Wagner.
In a further shakeup, Steve Kornacki, famous for his big election night appearances, is moving to NBC.
Sources also suggest that O’Donnell has been negotiating his contract but is running into obstacles.
A well-placed insider revealed that O’Donnell was hoping to secure a deal similar to that of Rachel Maddow, which includes working just one day a week and hosting a podcast.
“Lawrence has been trying to renegotiate, aiming for what they’re calling ‘The Rachel Maddow Deal’ – working one day a week and recording a podcast, but that kind of arrangement is unlikely now,” the insider said.
Maddow’s highly lucrative contract, which allowed her to anchor only one day a week, is no longer seen as feasible in today’s media environment, especially as the landscape shifts with the end of Tr::ump’s first 100 days in office.
O’Donnell’s ratings, tied to Maddow’s full-time coverage, could suffer once her schedule reverts to just one night a week.
“Ratings have been down, and when Rachel’s full-time coverage ends, it’s expected Lawrence’s numbers will drop too, as she’s his lead-in,” the source noted.
O’Donnell, who took an extended break from his primetime show, The Last Word, from March 13 to April 1, had previously joked that he didn’t sign up for nonstop coverage of Tr::ump’s first 100 days.
