Whit shared a photo of himself behind David’s desk as he filmed the pre-recorded show, which airs tonight.
“Holiday duty… happy 4th 🇺🇸!” the GMA star captioned the post on Instagram on Wednesday.
“Proud of you Mr Johnson. Believe one day the desk will be yours,” a fan commented.
“I just love you Whit!! So professional, yet funny!!” another added.
“Looks good on you Whit! Hardest worker in the room,” a third posted.
Whit was back onscreen on Thursday morning for GMA.
Rebecca Jarvis filled in for Robin Roberts and Gio Benitez took Michael Strahan’s seat at the desk on the morning show.
Sam Champion was still on hand to provide the weather forecast for viewers.
There was a major shakeup on the desk last week as George took several days off following the death of his father Reverend Robert George Stephanopoulos.
Reverend Robert died on June 19.

George was absent from the show for a week, returned for a day, and was off again.
The TV anchor’s wife, Ali Wentworth, shared the devastating news of Robert’s death on Instagram.
“He was my father-in-law and I loved him dearly. He married us,” she wrote.
“He laughed with us. He debated our daughters. He praised my Thanksgiving turkey.”

The reverend’s funeral was held in Ohio on June 26, according to his obituary.
Fellow GMA host Michael also took absences from the show following his daughter’s cancer diagnosis.
In October 2023, the former NFL star revealed his daughter Isabella was battling medulloblastoma.
She had emergency surgery to remove a golfball-sized mass in her brain.
He was regularly missing from the show to be by his daughter’s side.
