A rebuilding AFC team has emerged as the new odds-on favorites to land Philadelphia Eagles superstar wide receiver A.J. Brown in a blockbuster trade.
A.J. Brown and the Eagles are one win away from a return to the Super Bowl, with the NFC East rival Washington Commanders standing as the last obstacle in their way. The two teams square off at Lincoln Financial Field for the NFC Championship at 3:00 p.m. EST.
Despite the Eagles’ success, Brown’s name has popped up frequently in trade rumors this month. Some naturally wonder if the New England Patriots would make a push for Brown, since the star pass-catcher played with head coach Mike Vrabel in Tennessee from 2019 to 2021.
For what it’s worth, the Bovada sportsbook now lists the Patriots as the betting favorites to acquire A.J. Brown in a trade.
New England hasn’t had a 1,000-yard receiver since 2019, when Julian Edelman hit the feat in the final year of the Tom Brady era. Veteran tight end Hunter Henry was the leading receiver in 2024 with just 66 catches for 674 yards and two touchdowns.
With promising quarterback Drake Maye in the fold, the Patriots should be aggressive in the trade and free agent markets for wide receiver help. If the Eagles end up making A.J. Brown available, the Pats certainly need to inquire about a possible deal.
Eagles Should Keep A.J. Brown, Regardless Of How 2024 Ends
Brown has been everything the Eagles could have asked for since coming over via trade with the Titans at the 2022 NFL Draft. In just three seasons, he has 261 receptions for 4,031 yards and 25 touchdowns.
Saquon Barkley is the heart and soul of the Eagles offense, but the Jalen Hurts-led passing game would be far less explosive without Brown. The 2019 second-round pick and DeVonta Smith are a top-tier receiving duo, and keeping the band together is the best way to maximize this team’s championship window.
