The Colorado Buffaloes reportedly declined a significant money-related request from head coach Deion Sanders amid rumors that he may leave for the Dallas Cowboys’ HC vacancy.
Earlier this week, news emerged that Deion Sanders spoke to Jerry Jones about the Cowboys’ head coaching gig. The team parted ways with Mike McCarthy after five seasons, having failed to agree on a new contract following the expiration of his previous deal.
Well, there’s a new fascinating twist to the entire saga. According to a report from NFL Network’s Jane Slater, Sanders spoke to Colorado athletic director Rick George and inquired about receiving more money for NIL and his coaching staff.
However, Sanders’ request was reportedly declined:
This is noteworthy because if it comes down to money, and if the Cowboys are serious about wanting Prime Time to replace McCarthy as their head coach, then the Buffaloes just gave America’s Team a real advantage.
It also should be noted that Deion Sanders’ contract carries a hefty $10 million buyout clause. So yes, Dallas would have to pay a pretty penny to lure the 57-year-old away from Boulder.
Deion Sanders Played Five Seasons With Cowboys
After leading the San Francisco 49ers to a Super Bowl championship in the 1994 season, Sanders signed a lucrative free agent contract with the Cowboys. He led them to a Super Bowl 30 title in the 1995 season and earned four Pro Bowl nods over his five years with the organization.
By all accounts, Sanders and Jones have maintained a good relationship over the years. Only time will tell if that will lead to Coach Prime taking over the operation in Dallas.
