Good Morning America weatherman Sam Champion has revealed a new, recent bout with skin cancer that left him with a surgery scar under his left eye.

The ABC personality and former Dancing With the Stars contestant appeared on the morning talk show Friday to discuss treatment he sought for an unusual mark on his face, which turned out to be nodular basal cell carcinoma.

“I hope that one day no one has to go through surgery to get rid of skin cancer, but, right now, we have to keep our eye on our skin, our hands on our skin, be very vigilant and notice any unusual spots, and if those spots start to change, immediately get care,” the 63-year-old urged, before the show played footage of Champion attending a medical appointment to get the spot removed.

“When I’m not bringing you the weather I love nothing more than being outside, but these days I wouldn’t think about going outside without sunscreen. It wasn’t always the case,” Champion continued, recalling “blistering sunburns” he sustained throughout his career of reporting outdoors, which led to his latest instance of skin cancer, which he had removed at New York City’s Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in early October.

Champion called the cancer “larger and deeper” than he expected, and said he and his doctor went one step further to prevent additional cancer pop-ups, including laser treatment to remove dark, precancerous dots elsewhere on his face.

The TV veteran said that he now doesn’t “leave home without putting on sunscreen,” and stressed that viewers should do the same.

He then demonstrated how to apply sunscreen to the ears, scalp line, and more, and advised his audience not to worry about potential scarring from cancer surgery, as there are treatment options (including lasers) to help get rid of that, too.

“No matter how old you are — my first one was at 26 — no matter what your skin tone, your skin type, your skin color, they’re cutting skin cancer off of everybody,” Champion warned. “So, it’s everybody’s issue.”

Champion famously had skin cancer removed from his body during a procedure that aired on GMA in May 2010. His colleague, Robin Roberts, also regularly discusses cancer prevention and awareness after she was diagnosed with the disease in 2007.

In December 2023, Roberts and GMA hosted an announcement that record executive David Geffen and philanthropic businessman Kenneth C. Griffin had made a $400 million donation to enhance cancer patient care at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, where Champion later received treatment.
