King Charles Reportedly Rules Out Harry and Meghan Royal Return as Sandringham Agreement ‘Still Stands’

King Charles has reportedly made his position clear on Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s future within the Royal Family, with a new Palace message said to confirm that the couple remain private individuals and will not return as working royals.

The clarification comes amid renewed speculation over whether the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s return to Britain could eventually lead to some form of official role.

According to reports, a letter from the King’s Lord Chamberlain was sent to “senior stakeholders,” including representatives from government, the military and Lord Lieutenancies.

The message reportedly reaffirmed that the agreement reached at Sandringham in 2020 remains in place.

Under that arrangement, Harry and Meghan stepped back from representing the Sovereign and ceased to be working members of the Royal Family.

‘No Change’ to Sussex Status

The letter reportedly stated: “It is well known that in January 2020 the Duke and Duchess stepped down from undertaking representative duties on behalf of The Sovereign, and are no longer working Members of The Royal Family.”

It continued: “This position, distinct from the State and Royal duties undertaken by the working Royal Family, and with the personal latitude it brings the couple in respect of financial independence and protection of their privacy as they would wish, will continue to be fully respected.”

The message then appeared to address the recent speculation directly.

“It follows that there is no change to the current status of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex,” it said.

“Their styles as His and Her Royal Highness remain in abeyance and are not used.”

The wording suggests Harry and Meghan’s return to Britain does not alter the constitutional and working arrangement established after they left royal duties.

Charity Work Described as ‘Personal Matter’

The Palace message also reportedly drew a firm distinction between official royal work and the couple’s independent charitable activities.

“The charitable work of the Duke and Duchess is a personal matter for them both and undertaken in their private capacity,” the statement reportedly said.

“In short, their position is akin to private citizens with commercial and charitable interests.”

That point is particularly significant because reports have suggested Harry and Meghan are looking to rebuild relationships with British charities and become more visible through public-facing work in the UK.

Those activities, however, would remain separate from the official work of the monarchy if the reported Palace position stands.

The clarification would therefore appear to close off suggestions of a “half-in, half-out” arrangement in which the Sussexes could combine private commercial activity with formal royal responsibilities.

Return to UK Had Fuelled Fresh Speculation

Harry and Meghan’s extended return to Britain has generated intense interest around what their long-term role in the country might look like.

Their renewed focus on UK charities and reports that they may undertake more public engagements had prompted questions about whether King Charles could eventually offer them some form of limited royal position.

The latest reported message suggests otherwise.

Rather than reopening the 2020 settlement, the King is said to be maintaining the existing distinction between working members of the Royal Family and the Sussexes’ private lives.

The report also framed the decision as showing continued support for Prince William and Princess Kate, who remain central working members of the monarchy.

However, the claim that the message was specifically intended as a gesture of support for the Prince and Princess of Wales is an interpretation rather than a direct statement attributed to King Charles.

What the reported letter does make clear is the institutional position.

Harry and Meghan may continue with charitable, commercial and public-facing projects, but those activities would be carried out independently rather than on behalf of the Sovereign.

For the Sussexes, the distinction leaves significant freedom to pursue their own work in Britain.

For the monarchy, however, the reported message appears designed to remove ambiguity.

Despite Harry and Meghan’s return to the UK and renewed speculation about their future, the Sandringham agreement is said to remain firmly in place, with no formal route back to working royal life currently being offered.
