ITV viewers are demanding another instalment of The Dark after the chilling crime-drama came to an end on Monday night (July 27). The series, which takes part across the Scottish Highlands follows DI Monica Kennedy (Laura Donnelly) and DC Conor Crawford (Mark Rowley) trying to catch a serial killer.

With their victims being young boys, ITV fans were hooked as each episode resulted in suspicions shifting on who the killer could be. In the end, it was headteacher Kyle Ward (Brain Ferguson). Although the ‘whodunnit’ aspect came to a close, as it was also revealed Kyle had help from the brother of a victim, the series came to an end with a dramatic cliffhanger.

Throughout the six-episodes, fans were learning small snippets of Monica’s past.

It was mentioned a few times that she was involved in the Burning Light cult and had a young daughter called Lucy with the leader.

While she’s managed to escape the cult, it looks as though her past it catching up with her as the episode ended with a letter being addressed to Lucy.

“I really like how Matt [Hartley], our writer, chose to pace that, because I think sometimes when you watch, it happens particularly with detective shows, is that the writers often seem very keen to make it really clear that this person has so much else going on in the background, and we find out all about it and we get the explanation of who they are very quickly. And that’s not how you get to know people in real life.”

Meanwhile, Mark Rowley, who plays DC Conor Crawford, added: “It’s nice just to prolong that, to keep the audience hooked in for longer to be like, ‘Okay, what’s really going on here?’

“It’s fascinating, right? Because I don’t know any of the other detective [shows] that [have] explored a character like that. So, to have someone so strong and then have such a held back vulnerability that you don’t know much about. You’re like, ‘Come on, season… whatever season, let me [see]. Show it!'”
