“Did Springwatch really just show that?!” Fans stunned as BBC episode takes a surprisingly brutal turn

Springwatch fans witnessed the brutal realities of nature as they tuned into Tuesday’s (May 26) instalment of the BBC programme. Chris Packham and Michaela Strachan fronted the show from National Trust Crom in Northern Ireland, where they shared footage from a buzzard nest at the beginning of the show. The female could be seen in the nest while the male went to and from bringing food in, including voles, rats, and wood pigeons.
Chris told viewers: “When they bring the prey in, just look at how delicate they are. They’re so well-armed with their talons and that really sharp beak. But when it comes to feeding their young, they do so with such delicate grace.” He explained that the chicks hatch asynchronously, meaning there is one large, middle-sized and small one, which typically leads to “sibling rivalry”.

The footage then showed the larger bird aggressively pecking the smaller one.
Chris continued: “They employ something called the Cain and Abel strategy where one of the siblings seeks to outcompete the others to guarantee its survival.”
The presenter noted that the chicks had already been fed, meaning their aggression is not related to food.

“Viscious attacks taking place in the nest there,” he added.
Later in the show, the presenters looked back at the nest and could see two sleepy chicks inside it. In a brutal turn of events, it transpired that the larger chick had succeeded in killing the smallest chick by pecking it to d3ath.
The adult then started feeding the d3ad chick to its children.
Michaela said: “We’ve seen this before and I know it seems brutal, but it’s not going to waste that chick. That’s what I find extraordinary when I watch this. It’s difficult not to let your own emotions get involved.
“This parent bird has gone to a lot of effort and used a lot of energy to brood the egg, then it hatches and it starts raising that chick, then it delicately feeds the d3ad chick to the other two siblings.”
Viewers immediately reacted to the hard-hitting scenes, with one writing: “Springwatch is SAVAGE. Baby chicks being fed their d3ad siblings after beating them to d3ath.”
