The investigation into the death of former Conservative MP Ann Widdecombe has entered a significant new phase after police announced a fresh arrest and revealed what they believe about the possible motive behind the shocking case.
Devon and Cornwall Police confirmed that a 28-year-old British man has been arrested on suspicion of murdering the 78-year-old former politician, who was found dead at her Dartmoor home on Thursday.
The suspect remains in police custody while detectives continue questioning him.
The arrest came just one day after officers detained a 26-year-old man on suspicion of murder. Following further inquiries, however, police released him without charge and confirmed he is no longer considered a suspect.
Speaking during a press conference at police headquarters in Exeter on Saturday, Assistant Chief Constable Matt Longman provided the clearest update yet on the direction of the investigation.
He said detectives currently have “nothing to suggest it was politically motivated”, seeking to dispel speculation that Widdecombe may have been targeted because of her high-profile political career or outspoken public views.
Longman also reassured the public that investigators are not searching for any additional suspects.
“We are not looking for anyone else in connection with this investigation,” he said, indicating officers believe the person responsible is now in custody.
While police have declined to discuss further details surrounding the circumstances of Widdecombe’s death, the announcement suggests investigators are becoming increasingly confident about the direction of the case.
The news has sent shockwaves through both political and local communities.

On Sunday morning, Abbot David Charlesworth remembered Widdecombe during Mass at Buckfast Abbey, where she regularly worshipped.
Addressing parishioners, he said: “I would ask you to remember Ann Widdecombe in your prayers. She was in regular attendance at Mass. It’s very sad not to see her here today. Please also think of her family at this time.”
Outside the police investigation, questions continue to surround exactly what happened at Widdecombe’s rural home in the hours before her death.
Authorities have remained cautious about releasing evidence publicly, including CCTV footage or details relating to the crime scene.
According to former Detective Chief Superintendent Roy McComb, that decision may itself reveal something about the investigation.
Speaking to Sky News, McComb suggested police appear highly confident they have identified the individual responsible.
He said investigators are likely withholding CCTV footage because releasing it could interfere with future legal proceedings or witness identification.
“It does appear that the police know who the person was,” McComb explained.
He added that making such evidence public too early could potentially prejudice any future identification process if the case proceeds to court.
His comments reinforce the impression that detectives believe they have made substantial progress within days of launching the murder inquiry.
Despite that confidence, police continue appealing for anyone with information relating to Widdecombe’s final movements or suspicious activity in the area to come forward.
Officers have stressed that the investigation remains active and that forensic examinations and witness interviews are continuing.
For now, detectives insist there is no evidence that politics played any role in the former MP’s death, while also maintaining that the public faces no wider threat linked to the investigation.
