The beloved GMA star took a break after his father died on June 19.
While he was absent all last week, George returned to his hosting duties on Monday alongside Gio Benitez and Rebecca Jarvis.
However, his return was just for the day as he remained off-air for the rest of the week.
During his brief stint back, George didn’t mention his father’s death; however, many believe this is the reason for his recent absence.
George’s wife, Ali Wentworth, was the one who shared the news of her father-in-law’s death via Instagram.
“Reverend Robert George Stephanopoulos, PhD, Dean Emeritus Archdiocesan Cathedral of the Holy Trinity passed away on June 19th,” she wrote.
“He was my father-in-law and I loved him dearly. He married us. He laughed with us. He debated our daughters. He praised my Thanksgiving turkey.”
“He loved ice cream. He was everyone’s council. He married or baptized almost every Greek on the eastern seaboard. He was held in the highest regard. He will be missed by so many. Sagapo Father Bob.” she concluded.
According to the reverend’s obituary, his funeral was held in Ohio on Wednesday.
George made a return on Thursday to bid Dr. Jennifer Ashton an emotional farewell alongside Lara Spencer and Ginger Zee.

George’s absence isn’t the first time a GMA host has left his hosting gig to attend to family matters.
Fellow host Michael Strahan was also missing from the show following his daughter’s cancer diagnosis.
In late October of 2023, Michael revealed his daughter Isabella was diagnosed with medulloblastoma.
Following her cancer diagnosis, the former NFL star took frequent absences from the show to be by his daughter’s side.
Good Morning America anchors

Good Morning America airs on ABC from 7-9am EST, Monday through Friday. The show has a panel of anchors who discuss the week’s events and current news. The anchors who appear on the morning show include:
Robin Roberts
Michael Strahan
George Stephanoupolos
Ginger Zee
Lara Spencer
Two weeks ago, Isabella shared that she had finished chemotherapy in an emotional vlog.
The college freshman celebrated the heartfelt moment with her famous father.
Michael briefly returned to the show earlier this week but was absent for most of it.
There’s no inclination whether he’ll be back the following week.
WHERE’S ROBIN?
GMA viewers have not only seen two beloved hosts missing from the show but three.
Robin Roberts also stepped away from the morning program for some time.
She was seen last week for a live segment in Portugal but has since returned to her hosting duties.
While in Portugal, Robin was accompanied by her wife, Amber Laign.
Despite her brief coverage on GMA, it seems Robin has extended her trip to a full-on vacation.
In her Instagram Story on Thursday, Robin was seen kicking her feet up while enjoying the scenic views in Duoro Valley.
In Robin and Michael’s absence, Gio Benitez and Rebecca Jarvis have replaced the lovely hosts.
