Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have faced fresh humiliation as a new poll has revealed exactly how Brits feel about them. The Sussexes returned to the UK at the end of August, six years after stepping down as senior working royals and relocating to Montecito. Upon their return, a letter released on behalf of King Charles confirmed that the couple’s position within the Royal Family had not changed, and they would remain non-working royals.
A GB News poll has now revealed that only 16 per cent of Brits would welcome the Sussexes back into the royal fold. News24 host James Macpherson reacted to the results, suggesting that public perception to Harry, 41, and Meghan, 45 is “not particularly warm” at the moment. Tom Slater, the editor of Spiked Online, agreed with this assessment, claiming Harry and Meghan “shredded” their public support when they left the UK six years ago.
“If anything, James, I was surprised that 16 per cent was so high,” he said. “Harry and Meghan, in terms of their public support in the UK, absolutely shredded it when they left the UK, when they flounced off, because they made it clear that it wasn’t just that they were angry with the Palace or the way in which they were being treated there, but they basically thought we were a bunch of backwards racists who just couldn’t understand how brilliant they were and must have been motivated by bigotry.”
Tom added: “So this saga never ends. The very least we can do is enjoy the comical aspect of these two which I think will continue to add some gaiety to the nation going forward. That’s probably the one benefit we can take from them coming back to the UK.”
The letter, published last Monday (September 7), also stated that the couple were to be treated as private citizens in Britain, and should not use their HRH titles.
The Sussexes’ spokesperson hit back following its release, claiming Harry and Meghan were “surprised” not to have been informed beforehand.
However, Palace officials told the Daily Mail this assertion was “incorrect”, insisting the couple had received the letter before it was released publicly, although they were not consulted on its contents.
Days later, Uganda announced it was pulling out of the Invictus Games, saying that it would not participate in any event without King Charles’s approval.
A source close to Harry attributed Uganda’s decision to withdraw to the letter, telling ITV: “Intended or unintended, this is clearly a consequence of the Lord Chamberlain’s guidance regarding the Duke and Duchess of Sussex that was rushed out without consultation on Monday.
“Sadly, the only people who will suffer are the Invictus Games competitors.”
