Richard Madeley was forced to step in as two guests locked horns on Good Morning Britain. Self-employed bricklayer Don Daniels went viral on social media after making a video accusing unemployed Brits of being lazy and claiming benefits. Appearing on Good Morning Britain, Don, who voted for Labour at the last general election, said that people living in Britain are “very lazy” and have realised that they are better off being on benefits than going to work.

Susanna Reid asked: “Was there something about the Budget that really got you motivated? Was that a tipping point for you?” Don replied: “100 per cent. I voted Labour because they promised not to raise any taxes. I know we’ve had problems with the Conservatives in the past but this was supposed to be a fresh start and they just lied to get into power.” Don has been invited for a meeting with Kemi Badenoch, leading Susanna to question whether she can persuade him to vote Conservative again. “I like some of the policies she’s bringing forward,” he admitted.

They were joined by political commentator Suzy Stride, who appeared outraged that Don was prepared to meet the Conservative leader.

She said: “We can all agree that there is a section of people in this country that are claiming benefits and shouldn’t be claiming benefits. We know that’s there. That is a problem. We need to tackle it.

“The thing that I want to take up here is why on earth you would talk to Kemi Badenoch and the Tories. They were in for 14 years. This is their mess.”

Suzy argued that when the Tories came into power, they scrapped schemes such as the Future Jobs Fund and Youth Inclusion programmes, which had been helping young people find work.

“It’s the fact Labour has lied,” Don interjected.

Suzy raged: “We have a million young people unemployed. There is no way that is because of us being in for a year and a half. That is a problem that has gone on for over a decade.”

Don continued explaining that Keir Starmer and Rachel Reeves lied to get into power, declaring: “Nobody’s ever going to vote for Labour again. They are finished. They are done.”

A furious Suzy accused Don of having “short-term memory loss” as one million people are unemployed because of a Tory legacy.

The debate grew tense towards the end, prompting Richard to abruptly cut Suzy off as they had run out of time.

At the end of the interview, Susanna asked Don: “Are you thinking of standing for parliament yourself?”

“How much are they paying?” Don joked.
