Piers Morgan has launched another blistering attack on Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, claiming their return to Britain could result in what he described as a “rival royal family” operating alongside the monarchy.
The broadcaster made the comments on The Royals Uncensored after new Palace guidance confirmed that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex remain non-working members of the Royal Family despite relocating back to the UK.
The letter, issued on behalf of King Charles, described Harry and Meghan as private citizens and reiterated that their HRH styles are not to be used publicly.
Harry was reportedly taken by surprise by the timing of the guidance, while the Sussexes are said to prefer being described as “public figures”, a distinction that has also been linked to their concerns over security.
Morgan, however, believes their return has created a much bigger issue.
“They couldn’t have their royal cake and eat it,” he said while discussing the couple’s new position in Britain.
Piers Warns of ‘Rival Royal Family’
Morgan argued that Harry and Meghan could now carry out charity visits, public appearances and other engagements that resemble royal activity while remaining outside the official institution.
That, he said, risks confusing the distinction between the Sussexes and working royals such as King Charles, Queen Camilla, Prince William and Princess Kate.
“I think the most troubling part of all this is that you’re going to have a rival royal family now in this country,” Morgan argued.
The phrase is Morgan’s own assessment rather than any official description of Harry and Meghan’s future role.
The couple have not announced plans to resume royal duties, and the Palace letter makes clear that their return to Britain does not change their formal status.
Morgan nevertheless revived the long-running argument over the “half-in, half-out” arrangement discussed when the Sussexes stepped away from senior duties in 2020.
“What they want to do is be half-in and half-out,” he claimed.
He suggested that Harry and Meghan want to retain the public profile associated with royalty while avoiding the responsibilities expected of working members of the family.
Morgan Claims Money Is Behind UK Return
Morgan also offered his own theory about why the Sussexes have moved closer to the Royal Family after six years in the United States.
He claimed the couple wanted to benefit from being physically close to senior royals and suggested that the association could help strengthen their commercial profile.
“I think they wanted to bring themselves back to being close to the royal family so they can bask in the reflected glory of the actual working royals,” he said.
Morgan went further by claiming they hoped that proximity would “make them more money”.
There is no confirmed evidence that financial motives were behind Harry and Meghan’s move back to Britain, and Morgan’s remarks remain his personal interpretation of the situation.
People close to the Sussexes have instead said the family is focused on settling Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet following their move from California.
Palace Position Remains Unchanged
Despite the heated commentary surrounding their return, Harry and Meghan’s official relationship with the monarchy remains the same.
They are not working royals and do not undertake engagements on behalf of the King.
Any charitable work, events or public appearances they carry out are therefore conducted independently.
For Morgan, however, their physical presence in Britain changes how those activities could be perceived.
When the couple lived thousands of miles away in California, their independent lives were clearly separated geographically from the working monarchy.
Now, he argues, that boundary could become less obvious to the public.
His comments quickly attracted support online, with some viewers praising him for maintaining the same critical stance he has taken towards Harry and Meghan for years.
One said Morgan had understood the couple “from the start”, while another argued that previous attempts to challenge his views had failed.
For now, though, the idea of a “rival royal family” remains Morgan’s prediction rather than a new role announced by the Sussexes.
The Palace has already drawn its line clearly: Harry and Meghan may be back in Britain, but they remain firmly outside the working Royal Family.
